I have none and want none of those "best of 2014 add-ons" except for Classic Theme Restorer. And thats mostly just for cosmetic purposes.

But since I'm using PaleMoon, the theme restorer is not needed to get rid of australis

I believe I have no need to make and outline a list for much "better" add-ons to those who are savvy.

Btw, none of those add-ons figure in the first 20 "Most Popular" list on Mozillas add-on page...

Makes me wonder what are the priorities of this articles original author.

Seems to me the author was more about customizing it than about security . If you want see the most downloaded add ons you can go right here anytime of year and see

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/extensions/?sort=usersNone of those add-ons even match up with whats being downloaded the most . I allso like trying new add-ons up and coming ones and I dont use none of those add-ons but Classic Theme Restorer and I use Firefox

I never heard for any of them :o

Me too. :o :o :o

And I have no plan to use them.

All my addons are for security purpose. :D

How about showing some add-ons that

the average joe doesn't know they even exist?

'Best' is a vague term used by marketing...

The reason they're largely unknown is that they're NEW to 2014. It's not meant as a best-of list encompassing all years to date. Same for the corresponding Chrome list, which reviews a whopping 39 of them.

After looking into it, it's not impressive. Their number 8 is my number 5. For now added their number 11 to 21.

To give them at least one spot in my present choice of:

Top 22 FireFox Add-Ons:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/extensions/

At the moment it goes like this.

1. Tab Mix Plus (onemen, Gary Reyes)

20. The Addon Bar (Restored)

------

21. OmniSidebar (Quicksaver)

22. FEBE (Chuck Baker)

------------------------

1. Tab Mix Plus (onemen, Gary Reyes) 977,599 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/

Tab Mix Plus enhances Firefox's tab browsing capabilities. It includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, tab clicking options, undo closed tabs and windows, plus more. Example 1: Toggle between Tabs in Firefox versions 34 and later. Go to TMP Options. Here select: - Mouse - Mouse Gestures - Now enable 'Switch to last selected tab when clicking current one'. - Click Apply. Done. Example 2: Go TMP Options again. Now select - Display - Tab Bar - Go to 'When tabs don't fit width:' Here select 'Multi-row' in drop down menu. Done. Has import and export of TMP settings.

2. Speed Dial (Josep del Rio) 463,400 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/speed-dial/

Direct access to your most visited websites. You can manually add sites to the speed dial by drag'n'drop from your Bookmarks or your History onto one of the speed dial slots. Use 'Ctrl+B' or 'Ctrl+H' to open the list of Bookmarks/History. Or click on an empty slot to add a link. Has import and export of Speed Dial settings. (Import of Speed Dials on a clean Firefox install works OK).

3. Session Manager (Michael Kraft) 265,952 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/session-manager/

Session Manager saves and restores the state of all or some windows - either when you want it or automatically at startup and after crashes. It can also automatically save the state of open windows individually. Has import and export of Session Manager Settings.

4. Clear Console (Rejah Rehim A A, Sreenath Sasikumar, QBurst) 36,758 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/clear-console/

Provides options to clear your cookies, cache, history, html5/local storage, http logins, all of them or restart the browser in a single click. The addon also provides options to:

- enable/disable notifications

- set preferences upon closing the browser (1. check options with 'Show Clear Options'. 2. set 'Clear-All-Without-Prompt' on browser shutdown).

(This add-on is important if you do not run a cleaner like Wise Care or Glary Utilities, which both address Firefox cache better).

5. Classic Theme Restorer (Customize UI) (Aris) 417,142 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/

This add-on restores squared tabs, the application button with application menu (known from Firefox for Windows), the add-on bar, bookmarks/history menu/sidebar buttons and other buttons. It moves star & feed buttons into location bar, ADDS STATUS BAR ELEMENT TO THE UI and allows many items to be movable. All features are fully optional. Some buttons have to be moved to toolbars manually using browsers 'customizing' mode. Has import and export of Classic Theme Restorer Preferences.

6. Tab Scope (Gomita) 193,111 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-scope/

Shows a popup on tabs and enables you to preview and navigate tab contents through popup.

7. Mozilla Archive Format (Christopher Ottley, Paolo Amadini) 190,249 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/mozilla-archive-format/

Saves web pages on your computer with advantages over the built-in save system:

- A complete page can be saved as a single file (web archive)(MHT)(MAFF)

- Open web pages saved with Internet Explorer or other browsers (MHT)

- Save many tabs, video and audio reliably, in a single ZIP file (MAFF)

- You can name files using the title of the page (title save)

- The saved pages are faithful to the original (exact save)

- Return to the original site you saved a page from.

(The MAFF format has the best compression -zip-like-. It's still useful to save with the MHT format, because that's compatible with Microsoft and other browsers).

8. Quick Java (Doug G) 255,015 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/quickjava/

Allows quick enable and disable of Java, Javascript, Cookies, Image Animations, Flash, Silverlight, Images, Stylesheets and Proxy from the Toolbar. This is great for increasing security or decreasing bandwidth. (Quick Java will add 8 enable/disable buttons when a Status Bar extension is present, from add-ons like 5.Classic Theme Restorer or 20.The Addon Bar (Restored).

9. Bluhell Firewall (Diego Casorran) 135,769 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bluhell-firewall/

Get a faster browsing experience by blocking nasty web resources using Bluhell Firewall, the lightweight Ad-Blocker and Tracking/Privacy Protector. This is a lightweight extension (ie, 30KB compared to ~700KB of other popular adblockers), which was made with performance in mind. No configurable options, subscriptions, additional features, etc It just block what can go to hell ;-)

10. Pop-up Controller (Sachin Chandran) 25,794 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/pop-up-control/

Never be annoyed by a pop-up window again. There are two modes of operation.

1. Pop-ups in New Tab (Green icon): This is the default mode once installed, and all pop-ups will open in new tab.

2. Block all Pop-ups (Red icon): In this mode, all pop-ups will be blocked. Pop-ups for favorite sites can be whitelisted easily.

11. Quick Search Bar (peterfaj) 4,119 users [or alternative Context Search X in the rightclick menu]

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/quicksearch/

This add-on places the search engine buttons inside the searchbar instead of the dropdown menu.

The idea is to improve usability if you use more than one search engine.

(If you install 21.OmniSidebar too, then Quick Search Bar will be integrated. In this case, to maintain access to all buttons, go to 'Quick Search Bar Options => General => here enable: 'Put-the-excess-search-engine-buttons-in-a-drop-down menu').

12. Show My Password (IKRG) 33,696 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/show-my-password/

You are annoyed because your password fields are always scrambled though nobody else but you can see the screen? This most advanced unscrambling addon shows your passwords in readable letters, while being fully customizable to fit your needs.

13. S3.Google Translator (Oleksandr) 205,904 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/s3google-translator/

S3.Google Translator adds the power of Google Translate’s automatic translations to your browser!

It supports translation of selected text, entered phrase or whole webpage between any of 80+ languages. New Feature: Language learning.

14. Thumbnail Zoom Plus (David Adler) 134,616 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/thumbnail-zoom-plus/

Shows full image when you hover over a thumbnail. Works with Amazon, Baidu Images, Bing Images, Facebook, Flickr, Google+, Google Images, IMDb, LinkedIn, Netflix, Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, Yandex, YouTube, Wikipedia, Yahoo Images, & many more.

15. Self-Destructing Cookies (Ove) 152,570 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/self-destructing-cookies/

Fix the web. Gets rid of a site's cookies and LocalStorage as soon as you close its tabs. Protects against trackers and zombie-cookies. Trustworthy services can be whitelisted.

16. WorldIP - Geo Add-on with Security Features (Alrond) 47,442 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/o en-US/firefox/addon/worldip/

Professional Geo Add-on with security features and advanced network tools. Anti-phishing. Protection against DNS spoofing and fake sites. All DNS records for domain. The real location of web server, country flag, extended information about datacenter.

(World IP works with a Status Bar extension along side, like the one from 5.Classic Theme Restorer, or 20.The Addon Bar (Restored).

17. Private Tab (Infocatcher) 70,213 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/private-tab/

Adds private tabs. Also you can create private bookmarks to always open some links in private tabs: just append “private:” before URL, example: private:https://addons.mozilla.org/

18. All-in-One Gestures (Marc Boullet) 111,938 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/all-in-one-gestures/

This extension allows you to execute common commands using mouse gestures, rocker navigation, scroll wheel navigation and page scrolling.

19. Image Zoom (Jason Adams) 184,307 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/image-zoom/

Adds zoom and rotation functionality for images. All control is customizable from the preferences.

20. The Addon Bar (Restored) (Geek in Training) 142,424 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/the-addon-bar/

Installs the addon bar for Firefox with the Australis theme (Firefox 29 and up). Restores the status-bar area. (Useful for things like 8.QuickJava and 16.WorldIP, for whomever skips 5.Classic Theme Restorer, or if CTR doesn't work for status-bar.

21. OmniSidebar (Quicksaver) 16,712 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/omnisidebar/

Bring your bookmarks into view with a gesture. Can move the sidebar across the screen. Can open a different sidebar by clicking its title. (To run this slicker sidebar without glitches, go to OmniSidebar Options => GlobaL => Here 1. Disable items like 'Add-ons Manager' from 'Always open in the sidebar.' - Because you may still want to open these items from Firefox Menu too).

22. FEBE (Chuck Baker) 138,897 users

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/febe/

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) allows to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions. In fact, it should actually rebuild extensions individually into installable .xpi files. (Experimental add-on really).

------------------------

Notable ones missing:

- Save Images (Lumox)

- Cache Status (Jason Purdy, Andy Portmen)

- NoScript (Giorgio Maone)

- Adblock Plus (Wladimir Palant)ff

- Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon (Jesse Hakanen)

What's the difference between Click&Clean and Clear Console? Also I don't get pop-up controller; FF already has a good blocker.

What's the difference between Click&Clean and Clear Console? Also I don't get pop-up controller; FF already has a good blocker.

'Click&Clean' (107,767 users and new to me -thanks-) performs a 1-click cleanup. In addition it can call up some browser info and a 'privacy test', both arbitrary in my eyes. Useful could be its ability to auto-run any external Cleaner, if such an external cleaner can be automated to silently clean Firefox. Click&Clean's home: http://www.hotcleaner.com/clickclean_firefox.html

'Clear Console' has the option to enable/disable parts of its 1-click cleanup. That seems flexible to me. Best run 'Clear Console' with its 'Clear-all-without-prompt-on-Shutdown' option. Clear Console's Home: http://penzil-clearconsole.blogspot.nl/

Both extensions look minimal. Good external cleanups can be done with 1-click Options in Glary Utilities and Wise Care.

If you want just one, from what I have used myself, Glary wins in Firefox cleaning. (Once a week will do).

Pop-up Controller can be enabled or disabled in 1-click. Usefulness depends on where you surf. I think it does more than FF on board blocker, and is more light weight than Adblock Plus.

'Context Search X' (11,337 users) has the same intention as '11. Quick Search Bar'. You have to right-click for it.

'Random Agent Spoofer' (26,233 users ) looks like a daring undertaking. Not for the faint hearted. :)

In #12 short explanation added under 2, 4, 7 and 8. Under '11. Quick Search Bar', now 'Context Search X' is mentioned as right-click alternative.

Well, a big improvement, so I replaced the simple 'external IP' with your WorldIP choice. You probably knew that would happen. :)

Thanks for that link. I will check the ones that I want to try.

And the original 12 here, for 2014, are no good, that's for sure.

@Batu69

I like Martin Brinkmann, but I cannot post a phonebook here.

For security and privacy, I do use some add-ons not listed here.

I think I dumped one you still use.
