Sonar
Stop those annoying Calls when ex-directory services FAIL. The Telephone Preference ServiceHere Its freeCan take up to 28 days to start PS: not sure if this works for any other country outside of the UK What is TPS?What is TPS?The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a central opt out register whereby individuals can register their wish not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing telephone calls. It is a legal requirement that companies do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS.The original legislation was introduced in May 1999. It has subsequently been updated and now the relevant legislation is the Privacy and Electronic (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.Who can register? The term individual includes consumers at their residential address, sole traders and, except in Scotland, partnerships. How long will it take to become effective?Once a number has been registered it will become effective in 28 days.Is there any charge for registering? No, it's free to register on the TPS.Who pays for TPS?No money is received from the Government to run the Service, the direct marketing industry pays for it.Do I need to renew my subscription with the TPS?No, the service is intended for live telephone numbers. As such, provided your telephone number remains active it will remain registered with this free service. J.D
I've been registered with TPS for years, IMO it is not very good, still get 4 or 5 sales calls a day . Better off to get a 'call blocker' but you need to have 'caller display' activated and that adds more cost to your monthly/quarterly bill
The Owl
I likewise registered with them YEARS ago didn't do a lot even though I am ex Directory what did work and costs about a tenner a quarter is undisclosed number rejection, still had one or two disclosed that come up on the caller ID specially india and Pakistan which I just reject, Knowing phone codes does help plus having Caller ID
Chancer
Part of the problem is they have no jurisdiction outside of the UK, and many 'cold call' centres are based outside the UK.
abbdoc
TPS is like robin williams said "A traffic policeman on vallium" in fairness if the call is not originating from the UK they have no real jurisdiction over it.However there is also a Commercial TPS which has a bit more teeth and appears more effective than the Domestic service-only time will tellIn the UK some landline providers offer a blocking service which dependent on your phone will or wont work, for mobiles however give "Truecaller" a goHope this helps
dMog
caller id does not work the aholes find ways to bypass and even with caller id they can still phone you insistently ..i have my phone set to block anonymous callers and any calls getting through i do not want i simply add the phone number to my block list... took a few weeks but now i am only getting unwanted calls once in 3 or 4 months...that number gets added to the block list too...I have also found that asking the callers to put me on their do not call list never helps as these calls usually originate outside of my country...i used to just waste their time and let them talk for along time then ask a lot of really really stupid insane question and if they stayed on the line for lang time trying to sell me what ever i would ask them if they wanted yo buy my car becasue it is really really good car and i don't need it any more then try to convince them they needed my car... but stopped being fun after a while
VileTouch
next time you receive one of those calls, stop the salesman in their tracks. and ask them nicely to completely remove your data from their records. if they won't comply, ask to speak with the supervisor. it worked for me....i kind of miss them now*snif*
