Microsoft's upcoming Windows 10 operating system could be the "best operating system we've ever created for gamers on PC," according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer. On the Xbox Wire, Spencer hyped the January 21 Windows 10 event by saying he's really excited to finally get to showcase "the great work that we're doing" in the Windows 10 space as it relates to gaming.

"For the Xbox team, this is the beginning of our discussion with fans about the work that we're doing to bring gaming to the Windows 10 operating system," he said. "It's really nice to finally get to be able to talk about this. We'll continue the conversation throughout the year."

Microsoft may be investing more seriously into PC gaming, but don't expect this to come at the expense of Xbox One or the company's other console projects.

"We remain committed to gaming on console, but we know that we have fans and gamers that also play on PC and phone," Spencer said. "And it's important that we build out the features that we have, learning from what we've done on console, and helping make Windows 10 the best operating system we've ever created for gamers on PCs."

The January 21 Windows 10 event, called The Next Chapter, will take place at the company's headquarters in Redmond and will be streamed live at 9 AM PDT. While Microsoft hasn't announced any specific plans for the event, it's possible Microsoft will talk about the operating system's rumored Cortana integration, new Xbox app, or possibly the brand-new browser, Spartan.

Windows 10 is expected to launch for consumers by the end of the year.

Pre-release exaggeration? Nice to hear but in what way exactly? Under the hood enhancements or some tile/metro/app crap that 5% of people will use? Or Xbox related stuff?.

No, hasn't been for some time. 8.1 delivers frames more smoothly than 7.. with 10 so close if you're running 7 just update to 10.. there really is no question of if you should..

Everyone should. 7 is old hat, no more significant updates now for 7, no Directx 11 or 12 and it's slower than 8.1, 10 is just plain going to rock, don't kid yourself. 7 is dead.

I would laugh at any gamer still running 7 once 10 is released.. Great OS back in the day but it's been clearly surpassed by 8.1 and 10 will just drive the nail in the coffin.

Best Microsoft OS Ever For PC Gamers = Windows 7 ?

Yeah, no. As far as gaming goes, 8/8.1 suck, loads of games don't work on them at all, not to mention the UI fuck ups. Also, 7 has DX11, but it will sadly never have DX12,

And "back in the day"? Are you 15 years old or something?

The only manner in which 8/8.1 is better than 7 is that it will get DX12, and that's it for it's advantages from a gaming perspective, As for its disadvantages; the UI, Metro Apps (more crap running needlessly), and those charm thingies that don't work if you use more than 1 monitor.

If what I read about 10 having some sort of a Desktop version (no touch bullshit, no start screen,...), it will most likely be the next great OS in every category, but as of now, other than DX12 (which is not out yet, so it's a moot point), there is absolutely no reason to switch from 7.

And saying that when 10 comes out you'd laugh at anyone still using 7 without even actually knowing what it will be like, all I can say to that is; Win 8.

Wish Microsoft roll back task manager. It's a joke for me as a blind person, the UI loads so god damn slow compared to the win 7 task manager in the same load situations... Kortana will make up for that though for me: I'm a sucker for siri functionality.

Ever since Windows XP/7 where vsync, buffering, and pre-rendering could be properly adjusted, I find myself needing to play many games in Windowed mode just to try and get rid of that gawd awful mouse lag..

Name me a recent game that has graphics glitches on 8.1 but doesn't on 7 with latest drivers.

And if there is even one, that's bad testing on the dev side, nothing to do with the OS. Don't kid yourself that the OS is not mature.. it very much is.

Only better cos it gets DX12? Whut? Do you even know the scale of changes that have occurred in 8-8.1? There are some big improvements OS wide you just sound unwilling to see that

because "ughh metro , I dunno how to install a start menu and boot to desktop"

No reason to upgrade? Wow. It's like all you think that changes is the desktop and DirectX.. seriously do you have any IDEA as to the scope of your ignorance?

The only reason not to upgrade to 8.1 is because 10 is so close and "fixes" a few issues people had with MS's more tablet style OS.

I know exactly what 10 will be like, hell anyone that even run the recent builds KNOW what it's going to be like because that's MOST OF THE OS right there IN FRONT of them.

Look I can't continue this discussion any further, sorry but you should read up and experience things before making such rash judgement on things you know almost nothing about.. Learn more and we'll talk.

Re the mouse issues, I believe most of these were fixed some time ago.

http://www.howtogeek.com/175722/how-to-fix-mouse-lag-in-pc-games-on-windows-8.1/

Could be just some particular mice now that have an issue.. Somehow I don't think some people have mouse lag breaks Windows 8.1 from being a better gaming OS than 7..

For most people it is, it's a simple as that. I expect 8.1 will get DirectX 12 also, I guess it depends on if MS places 10 as almost a service pack for 8.1.. with a small fee for the upgrade..

We'll find out soon, but from 8.1 to 10 is a no brainer as well, especially if it's cheap to upgrade.

Yeah, the mouse lag with VSync and frame buffering is annoying, but nowhere near as disastrous as mouse smoothing/acceleration/deceleration that cannot be disabled. I've had to deal with poor mouse control so many times that I literally cannot play a game if it doesn't have raw input (or a way to get it) anymore,

Why recent? PCs aren't consoles, we have always had, and can reasonably expect, backwards compatibility.

None of the changes affect gaming, which my post was obviously about. And when did I say that I don't know how to "install a start menu and boot to desktop"? Stuff like classic shell, startisback and start8 are workarounds for a problem that shouldn't have existed in the first place.

Again, for gaming, there is no reason to upgrade to 8/8.1.

Looks like you're the one who needs to (re)read the thread, as it is about gaming, which you seem to totally ignore.

Apparently, Win8/8.1 will not be getting DX12 either, so as of now it is officially needless to switch to it from 7 from a gaming perspective. Only option is to wait for 10, which will be a free upgrade for most 7/8/8.1 users for 1 year.
