A: Shockwave Player displays content created with Adobe Director 11.5 software such as high-performance multiuser games, interactive 3D product simulations, online entertainment, and training applications. By using extensions, developers can extend the capabilities of Shockwave Player to play back custom-built applications.

Flash Player displays content created with Flash Professional CS5. This content includes web applications, website user interfaces, interactive online advertising, and rich Internet applications (RIAs) created using Flex.

Does average user need Shockwave Player in his/her system ?

Shockwave Player installs an .exe program in the pc, and an addon / extension in the browser.

No. I don't use Flash in Firefox. Less ads too.

Joe, I asked about Shockwave Player not Flash Player ... Do I need it ?

Can you really manage completely without Flash Player (not blocked BUT not even installed) ????

So many sites demand Flash enabled - for instance file hosting sites or even Metascan page, where you used to check files for malware..

So how can you use Metascan without Flash installed ?

They are both installed in your pc, and browser(s)

HTML5.

I found a page where one can check if Shockwave Player, Flash Player and Macromedia Authorware are installed in his/her system.

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/

According to this page and to the list of my add-ons there is no Shockwave Player in my system.

That's why I keep asking - do I need it ? Should I install it or maybe just skip it ?

@mona Shockwave Player is not needed .

This author has long advised computer users who have Adobe‘s Shockwave Player installed to junk the product, mainly on the basis that few sites actually require the browser plugin, and because it’s yet another plugin that requires constant updating. But I was positively shocked this week to learn that this software introduces a far more pernicious problem: Turns out, it bundles a component of Adobe Flash that is more than 15 months behind on security updates, and which can be used to backdoor virtually any computer running it.

Really not many sites dont even use adobe-shockwave anymore.

On the other hand flash player is handy I dont like HTML5 never have . Just I use and add-on to toggle it off when not using it .

@ steven36

Your post fully answers my questions. Thank you very much Steven..

@ joe13

Joe, you are constantly talking abt Flash, but my problem was referred to Shockwave Player NOT Flash !

But if we are actually considering Flash - I didn't asked abt. YT vids (I know they can be played with HTML5) but OTHER CONTENT on various sites :

Here is yet unanswered question from previous post :

"So many sites demand Flash enabled - for instance file hosting sites or even Metascan page, where you used to check files for malware..

So how can you use Metascan without Flash installed ?"

I'm asking just for curiosity - so please answer if you can ...

Even if you use and add-on to force HTML5 it would only support certain sites because all sites dont have HTML5.

Like this addon

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-without-flash/?src=search

Supported sites/embed video player

  • Youtube
  • Blip
  • HTML5
  • Dailymotion
  • NicoNico
  • FC2

To watch ScreenWaveMedia videos use this plugin https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/swm-video-without-flash/

Edit: the thing if you use Firefox with HTML5 at YouTube there Canvas-Fingerprinting you at YouTube and if you use this addon to block it

CanvasBlocker https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/canvasblocker/?src=api it breaks HTML5 only it works with flash

Chrome have and add-on though that changes the hash for Canvas and works with HTML5 so if you dont like getting tracked and want to use HTML5 in chrome with there Canvas blocking add-on ;)
