my pet peeves

-you know that kind of people that grab a newspaper and only look at the pictures? and then you ask them, "hey, what did you just see?" "eeh...nothing"

-people that have been using a computer for years, but somehow have no idea of the difference between the internet and the computer? let me explain, they don't know where the web content ends and where the browser begins, so they're the kind of people that write down addresses in google's search box (or whatever appears first) and then click on the results.

-similarily, they have no concept of what an ad is. for them everything is part of the page. a sad test i ran recently was installing an ad blocker in their browser because of how disgusted i was of the mess of ads and popups. guess what happened? they didn't see ANY difference!

oh but they did ask "why was the screen bigger now?" my answer: because i removed the 16 toolbars from the browser! their response? oh you are removing things from my computer? and...and what's a toolbar?, and what's a browser? i just want you to fix my computer not for you to be "removing" things! (sigh...)

-people that, while using a computer pull out a piece of paper and a pen to calculate something, or to write down something that they are going to use right away.

-people that write EVERYTHING in msWord, even the simplest things, and then save EVERYTHING in the desktop, because if it's not there they cannot find it again, not even things that are in the recycle bin!

-people that call you in the middle of the night...on a sunday...to tell you their computer has an error but somehow they are blind to what the text of the error says, they somehow just see the red icon on top! or can only tell that the blue screen is...blue!.

-people that don't know the purpose (or existance) of the ENTER key. if they type something in a text field and it has no "go" button next to it or under it they stall!, of course they will click on anything that is next to said text field, even if it says "BUY NOW!" and it's flashing in different colors, because, of course, they don't notice the flashing, let alone read what's in it.

-but it goes farther than just not knowing. things like prices with currency signs that they KNOW like US$ or € or ¥ or CH$, BR$ etc.

they stall wondering how much money is that supposed to mean... and don't even get me started with the thousands separators (is that seven hundred?, seven thousands?, or seven millions? no idea because they only see a 7 and a bunch of zeroes)

that's most of it. i tried googling some of these to see if it's some kind of... disease (that's what they call stupidity these days  ) and more importantly if there's a cure. but without luck.

so, what are your pet peeves?

Congrats for your insightful and accurate observation.

I know people EXACTLY like those you described, too.

Don't know should I laugh out of it or rather cry ..... :s :(

Such folks exist in almost any area which requires expertise and/or comprehension...:

A very common example of this is folks who NEVER EVEN KNOW that it is important to check the critical fluids in their cars; the closest many come to such thoughts is that "you're supposed to get the oil changed sometimes, right ??".

Then when they burn up the engine or tranny because there's no oil or coolant left in the thing - they STILL do not learn anything about keeping a car.

And while we are sharing rants about stuff - the newer cars help folks to stay clueless BY DESIGN !!

Example:

Toyota has an idiot light that says 'maint reqd' - and this means WHAT - what is your guess ??

I'll tell what it means:

It means the oil change timer is up - or whoever changed the oil knew nothing about resetting the doggone thing.

And most serious stuff is grouped into the 'check engine' light, which gets soundly ignored - and for good reasons too.

Sure - the hideous thing CAN mean there is zero oil pressure & the engine is burning up, BUT:

Usually it is because of something trivial like a loose fuel cap - which is not even part of the car's engine !!!

So, here's a bonus for you:

Car idiot lights are all unasinous.

(Want to know what that means ?? OK, look here=> http://www.kokogiak.com/logolepsy/ow_u.html )

Best Wishes to All (Even those having cranial-rectal inversions.)

lol @ cranial-rectal inversion. they have their ass stuck up their head so far....or something like that

i'm afraid the motor industry is not the only one making efforts to keep their users clueless. i keep stumbling with areas where dumbing down is the norm. i'm all in for simplicity! hell, it was like a mantra at my university (KISS, KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid!) but that didn't mean we had to cater to the dumb, you're still supposed to know what you're working with. and if you're a computer user, the minimum you are expected is to look at what's on screen. you don't need a degree to use a car or a computer, but you should at least not have undergone a lobotomy.

that "maint reqd" light is a clear message: "you don't need to know what's wrong with it!, take it to a certified mechanic and PAY UP!...bitch!" might as well have "pay up" flashing red on the dash, but let's not give them any new ideas, shall we?
