Private Firewall, No Glitter. It just works. My Choice.

Private Firewall. Simple UI and straight forward if you want to block IPs or sites. Light and less annoying pop up. Very effective.

For maximum effectiveness, I like the COMODO - a great firewall for Home Users.

For mass deployment, I prefer to use a controller - Windows Firewall Control shines at that.

Just an heads-up, suggest not using any sort of controller since the native firewall built into XP does not permit auditing outbound packets. :(

Notifications do not depend upon the firewall - they depend upon the User.

Every firewall has an option to configure the verbosity of notifications - Advanced Users prefer full notifications. ^_^

Yes Windows8FirewallControl Plus simply the best one if you use windows 7 or windows 8 firewall , You can turn off notifications for any program by just by checking a box it dont clutter up your Native Firewall with rules All its rules are done with in Windows8FirewallControl and works for anything . Its very stable and they dont have to update it every month to fix bugs . Even though they have development versions if you want to be a beta tester . ;)

As far as XP , that's what all these 3rd party firewalls were invented for so options are unlimited , Private Firewall works very good in XP . If it were me Id use Private Firewall or some kind of security suite with a Firewall . Just about all suites have and auto mode were you dont see notifications from me testing them here a few months in and XP VM . :)

Windows Firewall Notifier.. is a good one which allows rules to be set and uses the default windows firewall... However it takes a little knowledge to stop it once installed... ( Or it used to- Task Scheduler ).. Free and does not require.. the usual..LOL.. ( Like WFC sort of )

DON'T forget about your router firewall and related aspects as well...

HoneyPorts will close ports or simply allow communication without rules..

For some reason I have a copy of Comodo in my archive...Dunno if it was recommended at the time... I use ESS 8 on 7... Nothing on 8.1.. ( Phone ).. I like the set of Rules... and system in which all aspects are considered..

The real thing to me and the issue will come that presents itself that you must allow communication of some default applications from within windows to allow it to communicate with itself... in that event I think that analyzation of the data on the fly is a must.. but to do that you will have to usse soemthing that uses that method.. not by rule set, but by scanning...

For example.. and esecially XP.. if I scan your network location with Nessus.. the report will state which ports are allowed to communicate with other systems on the outside.. including divulging informtaion which can make your system uniquely identifiable to the outside.. even through information or data mined by other programs and uploaded or communicated online. This can hapen when you run otherwise harmless programs on your system... that communicated while they are open or run an open port.. then you have a whole... Even something that someone smart enough can use to gather data for an attack vector...

All that said just something to think about... ( While we are all texting away on our phones hooked into all of our accounts all over the web.... that we have no idea about what is going on behind the scenes....LOL ) Trust in the hands of God.. I mean Microsoft... ;P
