Sonar
For my experience with defrag tools they tend to fall down the same lines as registry cleaners. These things trick people into believing they are actually doing something. The more you run them the more you drain the life out of your devices.if your drive is that sluggish then replacing it with a new one will solve that :P

jackieo
Sonar you are VERY wrong. I do video editing and having my drive defragged is CRUCIAL . it frees up a contiguous space all in 1 huge block of free space rather than a drive that looks like swiss cheese full of holes and zero contiguous chunk of free space.Diskeeper wants to run all the time in the background...which sucks, and places stress on the hard drive by making it run constantly and building heat. :pos:Perfect disk only runs when you run it, which is by far a better scenario, AND it has smart placement features that put your most recently used files at the outer edge of the disk ( where the speed is) making life a bit quicker and snappier! :)it even lets you choose which type of files you want and also lets you choose how to arrange them, and also if you want free space and how much between each section of file types! its just awesome its the best!I feel so familiar with PD that I could make a decent tutorial, but their help files are awesome, and very user friendly. You can experiment with the various Smart Placement scenarios, and you will figure out what works best for you.( I see my drive is a bit full - note the red text -I need to free up some space...been DL'in movies lately..hehe)it also has a "shut down computer when finished" button, so I usually make it the last thing I do, at the end of the day, and let it defrag while I go to sleep.WINNER: PERFECT DISK! :) I use Perfect Disk it just kicks ass! 10/10I used to use diskeeper on XP ( the original diskeeper before they changed it) which ran only when you ran it.then when Vista came out, they rewrote the whole program and made it run all the time, I didnt like that.then I got my laptop running 7 and I was using Auslogics defrag which is also better than diskeeper ( only runs when you run it) but - Perfect Disk bests it because of the smart placement feature.Interesting trivia: Executive Software - maker of diskeeper, made the built in defragmenter for XP, which was a very basic defragger, not many people realise this. ;)edit: fix spelling, add pics, etc

Blackchildcx
switched from Diskeeper 2011 premier with hyperfast to Raxco PD 12 and 13 PRO...Its not that easy...Both are great in what they do...For me Diskeeper is a bit more powerfull but offers almost NO settings for advanced using...PD smart placement with the many many extra settings makin it a top choise...I would buy Diskeeper but not for that price...CMON....and the guy is a scientologic and I heard they collect data as crazy......last words...I purchased Raxco PD 13 PRO last Year...And I had many many issues while it could not defrag c drive...was freezing....so I switched to the business edition which is pirated and ....and guess.........NO ISSUES SINCE 8 weeks.............pirated seems to b the better choise :troll:read this:This is a datasheed from Raxco Ltd. steven36
Do Third-Party Defrag Utilities Really Matter? It’s impossible to write an article about defrag and not at least mention third-party defrag utilities—but unfortunately we don’t have solid benchmarks to prove that they improve performance better than the default defrag built into Windows. Our general, non-scientific testing has shown that commercial defrag utilities definitely accomplish the task a little better, adding features like boot-time defrag and boot speed optimization that the built-in defrag doesn’t have. They can generally defrag system files a little better, and they usually include tools for defragging the registry as well. But here’s what they won’t tell you: Over the years, as hard drives have gotten much faster at both sequential and random reads and writes, the usefulness of defrag has dropped a bit. Your hard drive 10 years ago only had to be partially fragmented to cause system slowdown, but these days, it’ll require a very fragmented drive to make that happen. Another factor are the giant hard drives in modern computers, which have enough free space that Windows doesn’t have to fragment your files in order to write them to the drive. If you’re looking to eek every last drop of performance out of your spinning hard drive, a third-party defrag utility is probably what you need… or you could put that cash towards a new SSD, which would massively increase performance.http://www.howtogeek.com/97723/htg-explains-do-you-really-need-to-defrag-your-pc/

steven36
I use to use all these back when I had very old and small HD that slowed down a lot my SSD is 1TB and came with windows 8. So I just use Defraggler it comes in my Piriform CCleaner Professional Plus Portable . I see no need to install something that i may benefit very little from . If you have the money to buy an SSD, which does not need to get defrag btw, then that is the best solution to improve your system performance.Otherwise, use a third party defrag utility.I personally tried a lot of third party defrag utility like PD, Diskeeper, O&O, Defrag, MyDefrag and many other more.PD, Diskeeper and O&O were awesome on their on-the-fly defrag feature.O&O is the simple one amongst the three and easy to configure given it only has the less feature and functionality among them. It's the lightest too in resource usage.Diskeeper might be more resoure intensive than O&O but it has a lot of features and quite much better than any defrag utility that I tested and timed the performance.PD is rather the best in on demand defrag with a very intuitive UI design. It is light on resource when you use the on the fly defrag feature. The on demand defrag methods PD offers are quite overwhelming and sophisticated but one can easily understand the best configuration that will suite the target system. It is resource intensive when using PD on demand defrag feature but the result is worth it.Have used a way old version of MyDefrag, tested it, and it was a disappointment. That was my opinion till 212eta posted a benchmark link and I'm pretty impressed by the benchmark data. The Big Windows 7 Defragmenter TestThe Big XP Defragmenter TestBased on that website's benchmark, it is clear that there are two winners in the third party defrag utility software.Of course, SSD beats them all on those benchmarks but it is a hardware. The winner on the Boot times category is WarpDisk 1.3.21The Start times of application category is won by MyDefrag 4.3.1 x64 (Monthly)Note: I have never checked the reputation of that site. hehehe! Take it with a brick of salt. :P
steven36
Well I got introduced to the idea of using mostly portable software back some years ago every since I dont like running services 24/7 like these defrag programs run . Is the little bit of benefit from installing one these bad boys even worth the extra service witch is known to cause slowdown as well in a modern day computer . It sounds a little oxymoron to me . galaxyquestor
For my experience with defrag tools they tend to fall down the same lines as registry cleaners. These things trick people into believing they are actually doing something. The more you run them the more you drain the life out of your devices.if your drive is that sluggish then replacing it with a new one will solve that :PSONAR - Unfortunately, as you are transferring byte by byte, you will only transfer a fragmented hard drive when you transfer to a new hard drive. It takes MUCH longer - and causes errors sometimes - to attempt to copy your data to the new drive, if the old drive is fragmented. If the drive is defragmented, it simply means that instead of the read head having to go from one platter, to another, to the middle of one drive, to the end of another, and to have to assemble the program from all of these scattered pieces in order to run it, the head only has to move extremely short distances - on the same platter (generally), and to assemble the program and/or data in the same location on the disk.Bringing all folders into contiguous space on the drive prevents this "scattered seek time," and this makes the drive, the read-write heads, and the data access times extremely fast. Why buy a new hard drive? If your computer is slowing down, just make it easier on it to do its job: DEFRAGMENT your hard drive, the data on it, your registry, and your computer will run like new, most often. You've been wasting a lot of money on hard drives. ANY defragmentation is better than NO defragmentation. Please research this - it is very important to you and a peppy computer that operates at its most efficient.Your hard drive is a library. In a library, why do they have a system of putting similar books together, by subject? To make it much faster for you to gather data on that subject. What if the books were scattered, helter-skelter, throughout the library? It would take you forever to gather the information you need. Same principle on the hard drive. Saves power, ram, read-write seeks, spin count and CPU usage. There IS no down-side to defragmenting.

After all your on a site were most everyone but a few are looking for free software. ;)Microsoft puts native defrag in there computers they dont put registry cleaners in them .
