I have 3 browser installed on my laptop, IE, Firefox, and Chrome. Recently, I couldn't remember exactly when it started, IE and Firefox now can't access google, youtube and some other websites, but not Chrome. What's actually happening here? thanks if someone could help me.

some info that could help

OS: Windows 8.1 with latest updates

IE with no addons

Firefox: ABP, EHH, KeeFox, MAF, FlashGot, IDM CC

Chrome: uBlock

Security: EAV

Using default DNS (have tried alternative DNS like OpenDNS but see no different)

It never ceases to amaze me that people will choose to use Chrome, there is no better way to be datamined on earth than to use that crap.

Anyways, that said....

Can you ping google from a cmd prompt?

If yes, then its nothing to do with DNS...and you are probably best scanning your PC with malwarebytes antimalware or adwcleaner - take a system restore point first

If no, then perhaps try resetting the networking components:

In an administrative cmd prompt type the following:

netsh winsock reset c:\winsocklog.txt (Enter)

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt (Enter)

reboot and test

Another hater of Chrome, here - on my systems (Chrome + Internet Explorer) are firewalled and also cannot be executed (in fact, Chrome cannot even be installed.) RL8WwPy.gif

It is not clear from your post, which browser/s is/are affected - did you try the following:--

  • Disable all security systems (and add-ons) temporarily
  • Install the affected browser/s temporarily, to a fresh new profile without any add-ons

The browser/s shall need to be restarted to see the effect.

@stylemessiah

I can ping google.com

I have scanned with Hitman, nothing detected

I reset the network as your suggestion but still not working

@dcs18

I have tried disable firewall and eav protection temporarily via, also reset Firefox but still not working

do you know how to completely disable eset service without uninstall it?

Just right-click the ESET tray-icon >> Temporarily disable protection (ESET service does not need to be disabled.) :)

If you can resolve via ping and youve also reset the networking components (not really needed since the ping worked) then its not networking related.

Its software or settings

Check your hosts file - standard step

Check for a proxy setting in IE Internet Options (unlikely) - standard step

Run a malwarebytes and/or adwcleaner scan, i dont rate hitman

The above things can explain why 2 browsers dont work

You can also try creating a new firefox profile:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

@dcs18 tried that but same result

@stylemessiah
checked hosts file, no changes
checked IE proxy settings, also no changes there
just finished scan with malwarebytes but found nothing
about creating new firefox profile, I have tried reset firefox and got new profile. still no luck.

I wonder why only Chrome that working fine here.
I'm also gonna try to look for some tool to fix that

thanks :)

did u try to run firefox in safe mode and then see what happens.

looks most certainly like a certificate error(but don't know how all 3 browsers got affected with the same issue)

in EAV,try disabling protocol filtering and see if it resolves your issue

:guns:

If I'm not mistaken that problem is caused by a digital certificate server being compromised.

There are reports that some digital certificate server (at least two servers as far as I can remember) are causing this problem.

Talking about certificates, try the non-https version of Google sites and see if they work.

Also, please mention the error you are getting.

In FF restart in safe mode (no addon loaded on next start). ... see what happends.

in EAV (approx. translation from French) : Advanced settings / Internet .. / Web access ... / URL address ... / Non filtered address + Active list : add www.google.* / OK : check if it's better now.

Surprisingly, for about some time, Google and many other sites were not loading for me too.

Try this steps:

-----------------

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /displaydns
net stop dnscache
net start dnscache
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart your Modem / router by switch off wait some time switch on
Change your DNS to google DNS

Regards

If I'm not mistaken that problem is caused by a digital certificate server being compromised.

There are reports that some digital certificate server (at least two servers as far as I can remember) are causing this problem.

I made a partial investigation and found that there did was a small number of similar case happened in our company's pc and laptops.

Searching the web for some clue as to what cause this and found that there is one blog who claimed that it was an update that caused this.

So I checked on the infected company's laptops summary report/log and found out that only one laptop is updated to the recent Tuesday Patch,

the rest haven't been updated for 6 to more than 12 months. From the summary report that I've seen I can say this is not most likely caused by a windows update. I'm not 100% sure though.

Asked some of the Maintenance staff to hook me on the infected machines via remote connection.

Read some pages that some were fixed by setting the clock, tried it, but failed to resolve the issues.

Did some of these changes.

1. Updated date/time/correct timezone. I just use the 'Update now' to synchronize with the Internet Time server

2. Updated the root certificate using XP root certificate update. I took that from this KB page and I tried this on xp and windows 7. (We have no Windows 8 on company's laptop so I have no way of testing this on the infected machine with that OS version)

The IE browser was able to access google search page, youtube, facebook but not twitter, gmail, etc.

Import a certificate to Google Chrome and firefox and still those browsers can't access those sites.

This is just a partial solution to access some site. Sorry, tried my best to help. :(

The problem could be

1. caused by a digital certificate server being compromised.

2. your system is infected by a new unknown malware. (I had it scanned with NOD32 and no infection detected)

Is the error talking about SSL certfificates? if Yes Disable Adblockers and retry, in my experience I had this issues and were caused by Adguard for windows and Cyberghost VPN, in addition try to check if your Time/Date is right

when you finally get this sorted, I STRONGLY suggest deleting chrome and use StartPage for searching and stay as much out of google as possible...( ya I know thats hard to pull off ...fuckin android)

I am interested to see the cause/solution...

@dcs18

I use firewall built-in from Windows

@nIGHT

Honestly I still don't understand about the certificate thing. the time is correct though.

@DKT27

not-https gives same result, but I still can access google with other domain though. anyway it shows me server not found

@iih1

tried that but no good result

@knowledge

not so sure about windows update and not sure how to check that. well its not just occur on Firefox

@GTA & dee.pee

I have tried that, the safe mode and reset Firefox, even I decided to uninstall eav temporarily but still not working

@mazigh

I don't use AdGuard and VPN service.

date/time is correct.

@jackieo

I interested to use Chrome because of uBlock, I love ABP for Firefox but it still eats lots of memory. anyway thanks for your suggestion.

I also tried to use Complete Internet Repair but it didn't help.

by the way guys, I can browse fine with all blink-based browser, tested with Opera and Yandex. gecko-based Pale Moon also doesn't work, WebKit-based QupZilla too.

This is a data. The type browsers are based on matters. :)

@dcs18

1) still not working when I disabled firewall, I guess the rule wouldn't give any affect

With Windows Firewall - merely disabling does not work. :(
