Amazon has $83 million worth of Fire Phones it can’t sell

You don’t have to go on wondering how Amazon’s Fire Phone gambit paid off. The retailer announced its third quarter financial results on Thursday, and it didn’t go well. Amazon lost nearly half a billion dollars in the quarter, and the largest single component of that was the Fire Phone, on which the company took a $170 million hit. In fact, Amazon has $83 million in unsold Fire Phones sitting around that it just can’t sell.

The Fire Phone was announced over the summer after years of speculation. However, instead of going for the low-cost approach that has worked for the Kindle Fire tablets, Amazon opted to do the traditional carrier tie-in for the Fire Phone. The device was announced as an AT&T exclusive at $200 on-contract and came with a year of Amazon Prime. The off-contract price was nearly $700, and it was carrier-locked to AT&T.

There were problems right out of the gate as AT&T had trouble moving the phones. The price was quickly lowered to $0.99 on-contract, but it looks like even that hasn’t encouraged consumers to pick up a Fire Phone. The device is currently hovering around 2-stars on the Amazon store page with complaints about the price, AT&T exclusivity, and gimmicky features. The Fire Phone uses an array of IR sensors to adjust the UI based on the position of the user’s head. It’s a somewhat entertaining, but unnecessary feature.

Probably the biggest issue with the Fire Phone is the lack of Google services. While it does run Android, this is a fork of the platform created by Amazon. It has all of Amazon’s services built-in like Cloud Player, Kindle, and the Appstore for Android. The selection of apps is just not as good as all other Android devices, and miles away from the iPhone. Amazon simply failed to give consumers a reason to buy this phone over a Galaxy S5 or LG G3.

So what’s Amazon going to do with all those unsold phones? Let’s just say, it might be time for a fire sale.

I'd be happy to take one off there hands for $5 with no contract. Would make a decent emulator for old atari or commodore games.
