Recommended Posts

I have a PC that was working fine 3 weeks ago and havent used it since. I turned it on the other day to use it. It booted up, got to the 4 blue boxes for windows and expected to load my desktop but it didnt. I tried using gparted live and then install windows 8 again, saw the 4 blue boxes again and loaded devices and then no desktop again. What could be causing this?

Plz let me know.

thx

Windows Update installed some bad updates before you shutdown your computer, or your hdd is dying. Or maybe bad drivers.

How can i check which one it is plz?

There's some LIVE DVDs available, where you can run operating system via DVD, Windows Live DVD or something like that. Though you can test Windows 7 also, but I do think that you might have some Windows 7 only drivers installed when you try to run Windows 8.

Try to remember what you did last, just before facing this problem - if you can remember, just undo it.

If you cannot remember - restore your system to your most recent state.

The smartest thing you can ever do - reinstall Windows and maintain your files.

Ie refresh Your Windows without affecting Your files and folders. This is the simplest, fastest and gives 101% effectivity.

If You have genuine Windows 8 key and it is already registered also on Your Microsoft account, You don't need new key.

Your Windows will be activated with the same key. But only You must install the same Windows type, if it is retail, then retail, if OEM then OEM etc.

The best is to install the same Windows again and then upgrade to Windows 8.1.

Either you have problems with you system hardwares or your windows 8 installation media has some problems.
Download a fresh copy of windows 8.1 direct from MSDN source. The great november_ra1n posted ESD format's link here. These are highly compressed and will save you lot of data while downloadin. Burn and instal.
Failed? Ok, now dis-assemble and re-assemble your desktop. Try again to instal.
Failed? Ok, put your hands up on the air and shake your booty.

@bruinator. As mentioned above, a common cause for the symptom you are receiving is down to a faulty hard drive due to either weak heads / failing components.

Head over to HHDGuru.com & grab the ISO version of MHDD an excellent app for low level HD diags.http://hddguru.com/software/2005.10.02-MHDD/

Should tests reveal bad sectors or read delays it’s time to dump the drive.

Guys, I just noticed i have my sata data cable that is hooked up to my hard drive and dvd-rw player connected to my mobo. Also, I noticed another sata power cable hooked up from my mobo to my dvd-rw player but there is nothing from mobo to HD. Do all I need to do is hook up a sata power cable from mobo to HD and my problem will be solved or might this screw up my mobo? Plz let me know.

thx

HDD and ODD receives power directly from SMPS, not from mobo.

SATA data cables connect the HDD and ODD to the mobo.

So, from SMPS power outlet, select the respective power outlets for HDD and ODD and plug them in. Then get the SATA data cables and plug 'em in their respective slots.

Used gparted to delete and add a partition for win 7. Everything loaded fine. Rebooted win 7 and could not get onto my desktop. For the heck of it i loaded pc into safe mode with internet access and it worked fine.

Why is safe mode I can reach my desktop but not in normal mode. Any ideas?

thx

Try this: (via CMD)

diskpart

list disk

select disk 0

clean

create partition primary

format fs=ntfs quick

active

exit

Then re-install your Windows 7, but do not install drivers. Check if you can boot it normally.

You can also try DBAN: (One of the most underrated apps ever)
