You mean hybrid drives that combine SSD+HDD? Oh yes, they sound good but never had a chance to use one.

Top-Notch tech... hybrid-mix....: huge storage capacity and top perfomance...!!!

Currently a happy owner of ia Toshiba SSHD 1TB.

Switched from a 2,5" 5400 500GB (Hitachi it was... I think).

I choose the SSHD approach because in my laptop I don't have a second bay for HDD, nor support for M.2 Slot.

And I needed to have at least 500GB drive.

SSD's that big are still a little bit too costly... and I was able to get the Toshiba 1TB SSHD quite cheaply (it was around 75 EUR).

When I first switched from a HDD into a SSD (on my main desktop rig) the difference was ENORM.

The difference between HDD and SSHD is not that big (obviously) but you can feel the improvement - the bootup times decreased, loading times of Opera (with maaaaaany windows) has improved dramatically... Smaller delays etc.

Was it worth to switch from HDD to SSHD ? Yes.

Would I switch to SSHD if I would have M.2 Slot or - a second bay free ?

No - I would buy a 120GB SSD for the OS+Apps and the rest leave on the slower but bigger drive.

It's a simple compromise between price and storage space.

totally agree so imo better way is to buy a small SSD/mSata (60/64 Gb-approx) for system & HDD for a storage.

use this combination in one of my laptops (120 Gb SSD+ 1Tb in optibay) -pretty good for me but in other one usin' 240 Gb SSD only-just awesome.

I have a couple Seagate SSHD drives in my Playstation consoles.

I don't know how much the performance adds up or if those drives handle the caching without OS drivers (as in inside the firmware), but I got a good deal on them so I got them.

As I've written --- I don't have a spare bay, and I need to use the optic drive from time to time.

That was a consensus.

if u really do - can install your optic drive in case with spare AC -approx 20 $US for not bad quality one ,as a variant.

not a big deal. i don't usin' mine absolutelly so uninstalled and forgotten about it .

Still using two Maxtor HDDs , bought them almost 9 or 10 years ago, still working fine!! Not using them for the OS.

Dont think a SSD does the same , but they are very fast. Will buy one for my OS ,when my WD-HDD dies.( OS on this one)

don't wanna to impose an opinion but quality of modern HDDs is crap (at least 2,5") & difference between HDD & SSD worth a price of last ones ,imo of course. about term of usin'...who knows ? we'll se.

i've changed my first laptop's HDD to SSD after 2 weeks of purchasin' cos fckn noise of defolt Seagate-Samsung make me crazy & after that....silence,absolute silence+ speed+temp. + no need defrag+.+.+... only price is - ,but try to remember how much a price of first USB-Flash was.

This is just one machine, all are mechanical except for the C drive which is a Samsung SSD (840 Pro in that machine) this one is a 850 Pro but not quite as many drives or as big.

Never saw the point of a Hybrid drive use a SSD for the OS etc and a mechanical for storage EOS.

Oh in case you can't add up 28 Terabytes storage plus the C Drive (in old money heheehehe)

Edit to say

I have room for one more drive, which I intend to swap out the F Drive with a larger one and put the drive back in all a case of when I get a idle five minutes.

P.P.S. (second Edit) the 1.5 and 2 tera Drives are old Samsung Spinrites work FINE been spinning for years.

the 3 and 4 Tera's are New (ish) Seagates but I presume you people realise the newer ones are made in the old Samsung factory and just have Seagate Labels? Samsung have stopped actually putting their names to mechanical drives, (all part of a deal with Seagate and have you noticed there are no Seagate SSD's?) also part of the deal.

That machine has a 1055T with 8Gb of Ram and old Radeon 5670 it also has a DVD Writer and a DVD reader in a Antec 300 case (Drives J - O are in Icy Box USB 3 Cases) the Motherboad is a GA-890GPA-UD3H also has a TV card running when I am here, it is purely for storage.

This machine is similar but has a 1100T and a Radeon 7850 but very similar including the MB which is a GIGABYTE GA-890FXA-UD5. and not quite so many drives.

If you have a desktop PC then go for a pure SSD.

for laptops or game consoles SSHDs make more sense. Because you can fit only one hard disk inside the laptop or your PS4 (I don't have game consoles - I mention it as an example), an SSHD combines both big storage capacity, along with the speed of a small SSD.

if you have a pc, the you can easily install more than 1 hard disks in your tower (or desktop) case. So a pure 240GB SSD is affordable nowadays, and you can have a 2-3 TB mechanical HD for storage.

so SSHDs target different market. Though, if you think about it you can install a 240GB SSD to your laptop and have an external hard disk for storage.

the choice is yours...

you can fit only one hard disk inside the laptop

in some laptops hv 2 or more(Alienware) slots for disk drives.and don't forget about optibay-it's pretty easy to install & cheap.

u can look here if interestin'

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=optibay+installation

so no difference between PC & laptop in case with SSD/HDD/SSDHD(Seagate Momentus XT for example) for now.
