I didn't get chance to take a picture but it looks pretty much like this image I found but with many more lines:

You cannot see Post Boot or OS just grey with horizontal lines.

My friends laptop was dropped. What's the fault?

Try hooking up the laptop to an external monitor. If you are still getting the distorted video artifacts on the external monitor, it is a problem with the laptop GPU/Motheboard. If not, It is a problem with the laptops screen. In any case, this is probably a hardware issue, and as such you will probably have to have either the motherboard or lcd screen replaced. If you do not have experience in laptop repairs, I would take it to a repair shop in your area that does. g/l

Yeah, I will do. I didn't have time when I was round. They showed it me last min. I would have tied that first. I'll go round tomorrow.

I can replace laptop components np, but I don't have the experience to identity exactly what that would be just by looking at it. I'm just hoping someone can, it would save me time.

Does the color of the line changes when the actual screen changes, for example, when it completes booting and enters windows?

If so, not sure about laptops, in the old CRTs, that probably meant one was required to change a particular screen size related capacitor or component. However, no idea about LCD or such.

I was in a rush, I was shown it for 5 seconds before I had to leave (I didn't even hold it), saying that "I'd look at it when I'm next round". No worries. I'll have look at it tomorrow.

There's a lot of inexpensive spare parts on eBay if it's the inverter, etc. As I've had excellent luck & past experience(s) with "Screen Surgeons" I'd highly recommend them as a possible source if you find the mboard/video card's OK & the LCD's damaged. http://www.screensurgeons.com/?gclid=CPnzi_rcpcECFSEV7AodjBQA6w. They even have videos / materials to walk you through the replacement and include proactive tips-n-tricks as well as perfect little specialized tools for various laptop models.

Since I see light on the screen, I don't think it's the inverter. The inverter supplies power to the backlight. i would do what locoJoe said - hook up an external monitor. Sometimes you have to unplug the LCD to force the laptop to use the external.

It could be a video connection issue - either on the back of the LCD itself or the video cable from the mb to the back of the LCD.

If the external looks like the LCD, then the MB is damaged.

the whole controller card for the monitor (including the inverter) is rather small (and cheap) in laptops, so chances are you'd have to replace it. last time i had to do that it cost me around $30 but of course, that's if you have experience with that kind of surgery. otherwise find an experienced technician that can do it. price might go up significantly though.

I'm currently having the same problem with my laptop. When I try to adjust the LCD angle, the screen shows similar art effect as posted by OP. Then I need to turn the display off/ON to regain visuals.
