Isn't PORTABLE uTorent PORTABLE any more ?

Just downloaded the last portable uTorrent release from PortableApps.com.

File uTorrentPortable_3.4.2.34309_online.paf got unpacked in my portable location, but then downloaded more data and installed the real program in : C:\Users\GW\AppData\Roaming\uTorrent.

It placed some entries in registry too.

OK, I downloaded the file from Softepedia this time : uTorrentPortable_3.4.2.34537_online.paf.

Slightly newer version, but the same ...online.paf file type as that downloaded previously from PortableApps.

The behavior was the same :

Besides files unpacked in a portable location the uTorrent folder was created in AppData > Roaming location :

I've made an experiment :

- relocated all uTorrent files + folders from AppData location to the original unpacking folder (PORTABLE location)

- removed all uTorrent registry keys.

So I "forced" uTorrent to stay really PORTABLE. :lol:

Guess, what I've got : uTorrent WITHOUT ANY ADDS and working .... :o :s :unsure: :D

Also I'm not sure whether there will be a possibility to save changes when using trial version of PEE.

Turns out we shouldn't use PortableApps.com version of portable uTorrent, if we want really portable application.

Note: the file available on Softpedia , CNET and other popular download centers is also that of PortableApps origin ! So stay away.

PortableApps version is badly put together.

Without any precaution it places its folder in C:\Users\....\AppData\Roaming, and what's worse - several keys in registry.

So the best solution is that from unknownasphyxiated advise :

- get the file from PortableAppZ (easiest way),

- use FukenGruven's universal launcher along with installer from uTorrent homepage

(the launcher itself is reusable; simply download uTorrent.exe and replace in uTorrentPortable > App > uTorrent)

In both cases you don't need to worry about annoying uTorrent advertisements. Both versions are adds-free.

Both of them are also purely PORTABLE.

Since these versions suite all needs - there is no need to prepare your own / Cameyo version of uTorrent Portable as was suggested by : n0_risk!, Knowledge and iih1.

Generally I'm not a heavy torrent downloader - just from time to time. So used to stick with public trackers rather. :)

But if I chose portable prog. I want my registry stay untouched !!!! :s

A paf portable should not never write to registry but if no one reports the problem to John T. Haller the guy who owns PA how will he know?

Talking about it on here wont fix it . Also saying your not going use none of there stuff is being hypocritical If it was not for PA there would be no other paf portables because they invented it. Here are some more opinions about PortableApps.com release of uTorrent (all from highly respected nSaners) : :thumbsdown:

I switched to qbittorrent because of how badly put together utorrent at PortbleApps.com was made I did not like how they did not care enough to remove the advertising among other issues. qbittorent every time I updated it would connect to my firewall and bits of trash stayed in my registry but still put together better. Thanks to this Release I have switched back to uTorrent and can confirm from testing that no trash is left in my registry. Thanks Fuken

exactly my sentiments..
it's even worse when you closely examine their coding..
they don't do any directory adjustments..
their initial adjustments is outdated, inconsistent, unreliable, and incompatible with Betas..
im surprised no one else has noticed just how bad their version is..
i used to blindly download their apps. w/out question..
these days.. im not sure what's going on there..
either they're not profiting or their volunteers are dropping off..
these days.. you oughtta be careful..
always scan before using, and for every update!

I can't believe John T. Haller's official recommendation was to switch to qBittorent!

The problem with the portable world has always been there's more complainers than people who make them . There's not but a handful of sites and non of them release everything so you have go from site to site getting stuff . Unless you want take up making your own like my friend did .
