Alanon
I just started downloading large scans of large books. Being of high quality and all, an 800-page book will have over 150MB in size. I've tried some of the "professional" minimizers mentioned on Nsane (FileMinimizer, ORPALIS, NxPowerLite...), also tried printing a new PDF through PDF-XChange virtual printer, tried resizing it with irfanView and some plugin... Besides the fact it takes quite a while, some of these apps didn't do anything. The most effective was IrfanView, but it radically degraded the image quality for only a fifth the decrease in size. If I use the "Low" image setting, it halves the size but makes the text almost unreadable. As it stands now, I have several gigs worth of large scans, with probably more coming. I need some way of batch-compressing them, or optimising them so that they remain readable, while decreasing size a good bit. They are simply images in a document, so I assume an image compressor might work (any thoughts, software recommendations or tutorials?). I also know of the Adobe Optimizer, but haven't heard any opinions as to its effectiveness? I would also be willing to extract the text from the file and build a new document, if such a thing is doable? :dunno:Another problem when reading large PDF-s in XChange Editor, is that it often hangs. The pages are sometimes only half loaded, with bits missing, and sometimes simply wont show text (only the paper), unless I restart it and open the document again. I've tried allowing it to use all the RAM (3 gigs) I have to no avail. I've tried Sumatra, Nitro and Foxit hoping one of them would be snappy, but Sumatra loads them even slower than XChange, with noticeably crappier image quality. Nitro has better quality but also has unacceptably long loading times, while Foxit hangs a little before every page is displayed, but it displays them properly every time. Is there a reader that is better suited for reading large documents and does so with no hick-ups? :huh:I know these questions have already been asked, but the answers in older threads have not been effective for me, and have mostly been abandoned.
