What about hardware and external peripheral support on this i.e. printers?

Well, many users of XP doesn't run away from newer versions of MS OS because they hate them.

Mostly they want to use software which still can't run on win 7 or 8 without problems.

It is just question linux v.s. windows.

One thing I didn't understand about those (Linux lite is not only one) linux distros is why they tell us that their distor can run on "almost" calculators hardware and right after that they promote their product as gaming OS...

What we suppose to do...to run games on 700MHz cpu?!?

My biggest concern about linux is that they can not make big succes because everyone want to make "another" copy of linux...

They should stick together, make one distro for "specific market" and give better support for it.

But, this is story for itself...

my Acer netbook runs Windows 8.1 without a problem.... bias journalism....

Windows 8/8.1 changed the CPU requirements which many older systems are not compliant with hence the issue

Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX processor bit (NX) and Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2) are features of the processor, and they're needed to run Windows 8.1.

  • PAE gives 32-bit processors the ability to use more than 4 GB of physical memory on capable versions of Windows, and is a prerequisite for NX.

  • NX helps your processor guard the PC from attacks by malicious software.

  • SSE2 is a standard instruction set on processors that is increasingly used by third-party applications and drivers.

If your PC doesn't support PAE, NX and SSE2, you won't be able to install Windows 8.1. When you download Windows 8.1 from the Store or run Upgrade Assistant, we'll let you know if your processor doesn't support PAE and SSE2, if it might not support NX or if NX is turned off in the PC BIOS. If NX appears to be off, the installer will try to turn it on during installation and, if it can't, it will return your PC to the current operating system.

Zorin is aimed at grabbing disenchanted w8 users mostly and has many, many bugs - so I gave it up for Ubuntu.

Adding in LXDE manually and then doing some tweaking makes Ubuntu look & work very well.

Using a LTS version means always 5 years of active updates too.

Using win32 apps is also a breeze as XP runs very fast & stable in a VM under this combo.

PAE - Implemented in 1995

NX Bit - Started with XP Service Pack 2

SSE - First implemented with Pentium 4 processors.

Once again, if it runs XP it will run Windows 8... Biased journalism

Nope your jumping to conclusions again,I have a Asus Aspire One netbook that will quite happily run a modded version of seven but will baulk at eight due to the atom processor limitations. In your case you were fortunate that the innovations were present but not all systems have them built in.

This said Linux of whatever flavour can have issues with hardware support and thus be an intimidating system to fix once support for hardware fails to materialize like the easier install users are accustomed to in windows flavours.

  • 2 weeks later...

How does it compare with Lubuntu lightness wise?

if you want to go even lighter ( and nicer) try bodhi Linux , i just install it over my old LG120 and it run faster than win7 who came with it.
