I'd be curious also, as I expect many people have the wrong end of the stick when it comes to 'hacking' (gah hate that word). Myself I prefer white hat, as I'm more of an ethical, network security person.

Don't hate the word. There is a long history behind that word. From where the word comes from and how much it has helped transform the technology through decades, you should be proud of that word. Just that most people don't know the details or definition behind that word as they are known to only one part of it.

Health issues.

Not my first post though. :P

Firstly, it is an urban myth that hacking is bad - for example, I work with a MNC that encourages and also rewards successful hacking (helps plug vulnerability on a initiated & preventive basis.)

I am an Information Security professional, and you should be able to distinguish b/w black hat and grey hat hackers. (there's no white hat.. :P)

Most of the hackers are not bad and neither are their intentions, they just test the systems for loopholes and report them to admins so that they can fix those holes before a black hat can exploit it for unethical purposes, those are grey hat hackers, or white hat for formal introduction.

But yeah, some hackers are definitely not very good in their moral practices and continue to harm innocent people, leaking their private information in public, these are defintely not good hackers and should be stopped..

It just depends on what hacker are you talking about.. :)
