there's also opengarden . with it every wifi capable device can become a hotspot and not only you can share your computer's internet with your phone, but your phone's internet with your pc...and your laptop, and your tablet...and viceversa.

its pretty cool actually

If your not going to WiFi connectivity, you can also use PC internet by just connecting your device with PC through USB port on "some devices including: HTC, LG."

You will need a 3rd party app, to bridge the two, the above wont work on it's own.

It works without any third-party apps, as some manufacturers gave built-in connectivity option such HTC, LG etc.

Can you enlighten me, as I'm aware you can tether to use your mobile data on a pc / laptop but not the other way around without using a 3rd party app, I've certainly nothing on my rooted nexus 4 which allows me to share my net with my phone.

The way I see it you need a 3rd party network driver to allow traffic to pass from your NIC to your USB (quite like a firewall driver) which sits between the NIC and the NET.

Edit: Aha reverse tethering, needs a rooted device & not for the faint of heart, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2287494

Less technical approach :- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371345

Both appear to still need a 3rd party tool called AndroidTool https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8bHtEroomvnelNVU0ZUZXMtWjQ/edit

Google play also lists some reverse tethering apps, which may cut out some of the legwork,

@Dodel, you don't need to tether or reverse tether, or root HTC, LG etc. devices for internet usage. Right out of the box, you just plug the device to your PC using USB and select the MTP connection type to "internet" and you have your PCs internet (whatever it may be a broadband, mobile internet etc.) will be available on your plugged-in device. That's it. The feature is basically know as "Internet pass-through" (reverse USB tethering), and it's available for use out-of-the-box, right from the first Android device they launched. Their devices has the following MTP connection type to choose from:

  • Charge only if you only want to charge the battery while connected to your computer
  • Disk drive available when microSD card is installed to help to copy files to and from your computer
  • Sync lets you synchronize contacts, calendar, and other information between your computer and Android deivce
  • USB tethering lets share your mobile data connection with your computer
  • Internet pass-through lets you share your computer’s Internet connection with your device, If you don’t have a data plan or you don’t have access to a Wi-Fi network.

Interesting, looks like it's an HTC specific feature (MTP internet pass through) and also uses their HTC sync app, I'm again aware that all android devices have MTP (which is default setting rather than PTP) as you sometimes need to switch to that for rooting (during adb driver installation). However I've searched google and cannot find any source that states any other device can do this OOB.

Do you have any source references ?

Thanks again for the input.

Edit : just tried this, disabled wifi / data plugged N4 in via USB, all drivers installed, was already on MTP as it's default, I have no traffic passing over my mobile from my net (which is clearly working as I'm posting here), also tried PTP mode.

I'd be interested in getting this working myself if it can be done.

Dodel.

@Dodle, I have not said "all", but specifically stated "HTC" and "LG" in my above two posts, that has this internet pass-through feature. Samsung doesn't have this. And, I have not tested any other brands making Android devices, except "HTC, LG, and Samsung." So, cann't say, which one has native MTP internet pass-through other than the mentioned.
