jalaffa
7-Zip is an open-source file archiver, that offers the highest compression ratio, using the new 7z format, which delivers compression results that are usually 30-50% better than standard ZIP. We tested it with a server log file, which compressed with ZIP had a file size of 18 mb and using 7-Zip was reduced to 8 Mb (results may vary, depending on file type). 7Zip supports 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB formats, so it can be used with all popular archive files. The program offers a basic file explorer interface and also integrates into the Windows right-click menu. It can be associated with any of the supported formats and also offers command/line support. Thanks to dimadr for the update.Download

brain_death
Could this release have something to do with, the final version of WinRAR 5.10 being made available on June 11?http://www.rarlab.com/So little noise made about this one, considering past history lol... :angelnot:
jamesbond
Also I hope RAR5 archives never (dont) catch up.CORE releases use RAR5. you're lost with just 7zip.i just have a feeling, the development of 7zip is almost dead... this new release won't change that. i can see only very minor enhancements. steven36
This tool is way better than Winrar. Can't wait for the final release. Also I hope RAR5 archives never (dont) catch up.I've had the same portable of the stable on my usb HHD since 2010 I rarely ever used it except for unpacking 7zip 00 files . Now Winrar is able to this as well its pretty much renders this software useless.Edit: I take that back seems Winrar still dont work for HJSplit 00 files like for videos but 7zip does what I always found fascinating is 7zip works better and faster to join HJSplit files than HJSplit does. kickmekeit
Doesn't any of you see better compression with 7Zip ?The Alpha (64bit) default settings are different from the 9.22 release version. They are the max compression settings which for most file types is the highest compression available today... As far as I've see.I'm not knocking WinRAR, am a fan and always have it at hand, but just haven't installed it for over a year. And haven't found a file 7Zip can't open... Yet. Fallon
This tool is way better than Winrar. Can't wait for the final release. Also I hope RAR5 archives never (dont) catch up.Not true. Just one example. If you split a large file, with 7-Zip you have to put all split parts in the same folder to unpack.Another example: if you make archives for the long term, let's say for a library, you may want to use recovery. It's not there in 7-Zip. Doesn't any of you see better compression with 7Zip ?The Alpha (64bit) default settings are different from the 9.22 release version. Yet.Better compression is to be found in FreeArc. A brilliant experimental freeware archiver. And the difference between 7-Zip and WinRAR is hardly interesting if you compare non-solid RAR archives with non- solid 7-Zip Archives. As for the files opening capacities of 7-Zip: 7-Zip cannot even open more than one .jpg file from the same archive with most viewers. A known bug. (I agree with you that 7-Zip can open many files we may want to have a look at). Edited June 26, 2014 by Fallon
