Just a word of warning about this Months May 2014 Microsoft Updates. My Windows 8.1 64bit was a FRESH Install as of Yesterday with all updates installed. Everything running FINE. I went to Windows updates today to get the Monthly updates. I had 13 updates for my system and 2 optional. I let it install the 13 updates. It downloaded them and installed them . My machine rebooted went to the log in and then started to loop. It said that windows did not start and the error was Page Fault In Non Paged Area ( AVC3.sys) I let it try to reboot 3 times and then windows said go to Recovery tools etc. as Windows is not going to restart. I restored a System Restore Point I made last night. My New Laptop is a Toshiba. My friend in town also with a new Toshiba lap top experienced the same thing with todays updates. That is all I know. GOOD LUCK!

Do you have (or previously had) Bitdefender on your system?

Yes I do dcs18. I have Total Security Installed. I just got 4 of the updates. I will not try to get the rest until I hear what you have to say about Bitdefender.

This is very interesting. A friend of mine had the same problem. He is using Avast Free.

Well I am waiting to hear back from dcs18. I have gotten 6 of the updates as of now. I took the two Internet Explorer updates first and then I took the Monthly Security Scan update and then I took the two Netframwork updates and then the optional Windows 98 meg update. I am now going to make a System Restore Point and turn off Bitdefender as much as it will let you and try to get some more updates.

I use BitDefender Internet Security 2014 on one PC , Windows 8.1 Pro , with all updates (may included) and no problems at all ... B)

I had the same problem after I installed Bitdefender on my laptop this evening. It prompted me to download some windows updates. After downloading the updates I restarted my computer and then received the page fault error. My computer rebooted itself 3 times and now it seems to be ok.

Hi there, Airstream_Bill :)

Just woke up in the morning to make my first post, here - glad your issue is resolved.

That was a Bitdefender driver conflict with Windows Update that was causing all that grief - I think we can expect a Bitdefender update to fix the same.

I had a catastrophe last night. Got the problem again and after I had all the Microsoft updates. Computer rebooted in a loop. Could not get to recovery tools even though on third reboot It would not even get to the Log on Screen.I had the option to go to Advanced recovery, but it would not go there. I had to make a complete new install from Recovery DVD Disks. Bitdefender is not on my Machine and will not be until they fix it. I sent Bitdefender all the info. We will see how long it takes them to make an Update.

I can't open PDF's now. Keep getting "invalid value for registry" and can't access gmail. I am also now getting an error when I do a restart "image failed to verify with access denied". I removed Bitdefender and still get the error on restart. My problems aren't nearly as bad as yours Bill.

Thats why I never will use win8 or 8.1 :D . Win7 works like a charm and never had any troubles with it or apps I use it with 7 OS ;) .

Everything works fine here. Working on Windows 8.1 since it's first test release and so Windows 8.1. Just two days back, got almost 50 updates over Update 1. All functions, features, and third party softwares works fine on both Windows 8 / windows 8.1 x32 and x64 bit variants.

Yep, Rok - that is right. :)

My own Windows 7 Ultimate works like a charm - however, it is no match for the Windows 8.1 Update.

Coming back to the topic - the issue reported by Airstream_Bill is related to some Users of Bitdefender, not Windows 8 or 7.
