Hello there,

My Asus laptop lately experiencing the following issues even when the laptop is in idle mode:

1) A sudden surge of CPU usage to the point the the System Idle Proces show the CPU usage to 0%

2) When the item 1 happens, the temperature of the hard disk will rise to around 50C +, the laptop fan will make excessive noise and then the laptop will either shut down or the screen will flashing black and white.

How do I investigate and solve the causes of these problems?

Thank you in advance for the assistance in the above matter,.

Thanks for the reply. It is about 3 years old, I can certainly reinstall the windows 8.1 system and start new. However, this would be last resort.

I don't know how and when it starts to happen, however, I do notice there has been a lot of svshost.exe pop up on by services explorer.

Thanks.

@ nitama

  • Open up your laptop
  • Clean the fan carefully
  • More importantly, clean out all the dirt that's clogging and blocking your vents
  • Before refitting, change your Thermal paste

this will solve ur problem if there is something stack in the fan witch cause a great temperature to ur cpu & gpu & hd (u can test it by diagnosing ur pc from the bios and if it happened again then thats the case) and good luck

Depending on the quality of the cooling-pads, yes - to a certain extent.

However, when the fan rotates to cool the hardware, it also results in attracting dust through the vents which eventually clog the air-flow.

So you don't recommend using it?

masterupc

What dcs18 recommends is the first step. Check for bios updates. If it doesn't resolve the problem then maybe it's software related.

Check for updated drivers. Do you have an antivirus installed? Firewall?

To check wich program/s is/are calling svchost.exe try processhacker (with adm rights).

Good luck!

Well, it's a good practice to use it especially for casual Users who place the laptop on soft surfaces like the bed which blocks the vents under the laptop. Others like to place the laptop on their laps - science has proved that laptops can affect the manhood, adversely.

So, I believe those cooling-pads do have a place in a laptop users life (provided the pad is of good quality.)

Thank you all for your advises. After reading your advises, I decided use coolpad and place a small fan on the laptop ventilation, and this seems to do the trick. So far it work flawlessly, the temperature of my laptop was down to around 40C and stay so, as long as the fan and the coolpad are in use, furthermore, so far I have yet to experience the sudden shut down and I hope it will stay that way.

Again thank you all for your valuable advises.

Glad to hear your system temperature has dropped. :)

However, please note - the relief from the cooling pad is just a temporary one and sooner than later your hardware is bound to cross the threshold when your vents will get completely clogged. There's no escaping the fact that you will have to open up your laptop to perform the clean-up described in post # 7.

You'll be surprised to learn that my system shuts down in 3 seconds and boots up in 8 seconds flat with an average CPU temperature of 2°C - all due to a meticulously maintained hardware with every software configured to a perfection. I perform hardware clean-ups every 3 months regardless of the performance and/or temperature. 8)

If you delay the cleanup you might have a potential reformat on your hands and possibly data loss, too. B)

@nitama: Better get your laptop's fan out of dirt as dcs18 mentioning above. This is common issue for machine more than 2 years old.
