Norton internet security problems

Thank you for your detailed reply.

One major key in troubleshooting is to find the good parameters (and environment) to force the problem to be REPRODUCIBLE.

1- Is it the case now? Does the BSOD happen in a well defined situation? (for example : same application running, connection to internet live ...).

If it is not the case, we have to find the situation step by step (brick by brick as a wall) :

2-From a fresh installation , without any application installed like Antivirus, or others exotic applications , without internet link (offline) : do you get the BSOD?

If by chance the answer is no, Then you install the application one by one to catch the BDOD event (the aim is to limit the number of parameters involved in the problem).

Is it possible to have the answer for the second question?

Safe Mode (F8) is a good start. If no BSOD, then disable all programs that start up in normal mode after Windows starts. Also, what you can do is uninstall one program that runs in the background one by one. I am assuming that you updated the BIOS, Windows, and hardware drivers already. For the longest time, I got BSOD, then after all the updates, no more.

What is your video card and driver version?

@fishcracker

I found this in internet (perhaps the same problem as you):

BUGCHECK_STR: 0x50

Probably caused by : WinFl32.sys

WinFl32.sys seems to be a driver file assoicated with a program called "Folder Lock"

Possible solution

If you have the program "Folder Lock" on your computer uninstall it via add/remove programs and see if your system becomes stable.

I would also recommend that you download Ccleaner scan and clean your computer, then scan and clean the registry with the registry cleaner portion of the program.

Answer:

Currently I m no getting any BSoD...(Thanx for helping me out)...I will let you know if I get any BSod within next 4-5 days.

Hi Box,

Your approach is better than mine, starting in Safe Mode.

Kotaxor, sorry what i meant to say was that i just wanted an opinion on a good/better antivirus/firewall/all in one, other than any of the norton products.

@ tonyblair

Thanks for the clarification about the 30 day trial.

As far as your advice on reinstalling windows, I've reinstalled vista and everything to factory state twice since the Bsods started to occur (a couple of months ago) and they've still happened.

And yeah it is hard when it comes to debugging i've tried it on a couple of computers but it is very difficult

@BBs

Yes i do have folder lock. And as a matter of fact, i've had since before the first bsod and reinstalled it right after i reinstalled vista again.

I will uninstall it and maybe just install it within a portable drive? and i'll let you know how it went.

Thanks for the support guys i'll post back any results.

No just uninstall it, let CCleaner clean your Registry and then install the NEWEST version of Folderlock(if you really need that) it should slove the problem..

Thanks for your reply guys.

-I uninstalled folder lock about 2 hours ago now and no BSOD til right now since last night. But i haven't made use of many programs yet since the uninstall.

-I will test the performance and see if i get a blue screen by cranking up the computer in a bit.

@tonyblair

Here are some of the things i've noticed prior/after to a BSOD event:

-It will happen at the least expected time (while surfing, opening a document, while running programs, and most of all, during a reebot)

-Time of the event varies. it could happen right once today and then once again 2 days from now and then again 3 days after and then 2-4 times in a single day during the least expected time.

-Event hadn't happened for about 2 weeks until i decided to update NIS to the lates version since NIS had disabled the ntr and subscription was almost over. Once i got the new version of nis, i tried the old ntr v3.0A and as soon as i rebooted, bam! first BSOD of the day.

-More BSODs followed as i tried different ways to install nis/norton360 and using different versions of the NTR.

-I'm not blaming the NTRs/NIS/N360 of the blue screens but they might help in producing the event as far as i've noticed.

-time and date of last BSOD is : May ‎11, ‎2009, ‏‎10:10:11 PM CST

-The event will happen with and/or without an internet connection.

-It has never occurred during safe mode

*i did answer the second question. Computer was sent for repair and i did indeed specify all hardware changes.

@box

specs:

Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family

Driver version: 7.15.10.1502

What exactly do you mean when you say uninstall programs that run in the backround?

The Best way to keep your windows clean of getting slow and other troubles are:

Disable all unneeded applications that start up(you can use Tune Up or some apps like that or Norton 360 can disable apps from start too)

Check what is running in the background with a taskman which shows the software of the process(as ccSvcHst.exe = Norton) so you can uninstall that apps if you think the processes are unneeded!

And stop messangers like windows live messenger or icq,yahoo and so of startup they just slow down your computer!

Never install applications before you search in google(search for problems that the application could make)!

Download and Install CCleaner and add to the "to clean list" the Temp Folder (C:\Users\(Your Username)\AppData\Local\Temp) which really slows down your computer!

I hope it was the Folder Lock application so you can have fun again with your computer ;)

@fishcracker,

It is pleasant to help you. Thank you again for the detailed answers (they really help understanding the problem)

Please follow BBS advice for Ccleaner (it is a freeware, you can download at www.ccleaner.com)

another question : what was the version of Folder Lock you used (5.6, 5.x or 6.x ...)?

As you can see below, this program has problems. The developper issue a release each month, stating that they solve OS errors :

Version 6.2.1, Released on April 30th, 2009

Bug fixing on 64-bit Windows 7, GUI enhancements to accomodate more space as well as compressed / reduced setup file size.

Version 6.2.0, Released on April 25th, 2009

This version comes with locking feature even on 64-bit Windows (all versions). Windows errors and issues in few OSes are resolved. Other refinements include faster processing, better overall performance and a few GUI changes.

Version 6.1.7, Released on March 2nd, 2009

This version comes with locking feature even on 64-bit Windows (all versions). Windows errors and issues in few OSes are resolved. Other refinements include faster processing, better overall performance, a few GUI enhancements to accomodate more space as well as compressed / reduced setup file size.

Thanks for the advice BBs i will definitely follow that.

@tonyblair

No problem man you guys are helping me a whole lot and the least i can do is provide any info at my end so that we can have a good understanding about the problem and how to solve this.

As far as folder lock goes, i had version 6.1.7. thanks for the details about this program. I do like it but if it turns out to be the cause of my system crashing, then i guess the best thing will be to move on and try something different. I've used truecrypt before. It' a bit more complex but i guess i can deal with that lol.

Btw, almost 24 hours since the last BSOD. I'm crossing my fingers for it not to happen again! lol

Once again thanks for all the help and support guys. I'll stay posted with anything that happens

Just saw this thread and I wanted to say that i used to use Folder Lock until about a year ago, It used to give me so many BSOD...

It hides deep into Windows to do the 256 Bluefish or whatever its called encryption, but since this type of encryption is rare (AES is the leader), its development is now only done by some software makers...whilst AES leads the way... :P

Blowfish encryption. Yeah i agree AES is better. Well thanks for the info it's good to know i'm not the only one who's been getting BSODs.

Btw, it has been about 39 hours since last BSOD. Everything seems to be fine for now but since these incidents don't have and exact frequency, they could happen anytime.
