Microsoft gave me 3 or 4 updates early this afternoon for Win.8.1. I think total it was around 32 meg. Now it is trying to download a 750.3 meg. to install. Wonder what the heck it is? Guess I will find out if it ever gets downloaded and installed. Be nice if it was the one that is going to put the Start Menu Back. Have my fingers crossed. Ha! No Such Luck.

KB2919355 Was a Cumulative Security Update 750 plus meg large

and then after it installed there was another update

KB2933809 Which was supposedly a Compatibility Update for a bunch of stuff.

The 'Start Menu' may/should be released as a separate download.

After updated I didn't see the startup menu button that we expected to be.

What button do not you find?

What I expected it should like windows 7 startup menu button that consist of applications such as office, accessories etc.

My Windows 8.1 64bit now boots after logging in straight to the Desktop like Windows 7 after all the updates today. It is great. If you go to what used to be the first thing one saw is that Stupid Billboard page and use the Arrow at the bottom left you will now see all of your programs Alphabetized also.

My update failed for windows 8.1 update 1. I googled KB2919335 and it appears I was not the only one that had an update failure

But from where do you hear about that, it should be. I can hear it right now the first time.

24 updates - without update one came first for me.

5 mins later one update (8.1 update 1) came at 750-800mb (wonder what the full change-log was)

As far as a start button that looks like win 7 style....to some degree yes but will also have a mini start screen pinned to it...if it does get released it will be this fall or later...you know M$. lol I use startisback anyway which I might not be able to use after that new start button does get released. No biggie though, I spent 4 bucks on two keys.

I didn't have any issues installing Update 1 from windows update but I did install all others first then Update 1 which was around almost 800 megs. Restarted a couple of times and back up and running. It did take some time to download it though....their server is getting hit right now. lol

Start Menu will return at the end of this year with the major update called "Windows 8.1 Update" as announced by build 2014 developer conference . . .

right click on your start button... got a couple new surprises :)

It is interesting that you have not discovered it earlier. Or is it a well-forgotten old? (Winkey + X)

There seems to be some confusion amongst most Users:--

  • The 8.1 Update 1 is not the same as the 8.1 Update - the 8.1 Update 1 was a beta.
  • The Start Menu is not the same as the Start Button - the Start Button was already available in the 8.1 and the Start Menu has not yet been deployed (it's expected to be deployed only later this year.)
  • What was deployed on Patch Tuesday is the 8.1 Update - no need to wait till later this year as mentioned above.
  • The 8.1 Update now boots right into your desktop - however, those who don't use any Start Menu alternatives can can still configure their older 8.1 to boot right into Desktop.

who care about the touch screen improvements and the start button ? we use mouse + keyboard and third party software for the "start" button. :D

Download and try then manually, if then also can't, then your system must be a little bit "damaged".

Well, I just wait for Update 1 to install Win 8.1 on my machine everything looks nice and works good. Starting directly on desktop is a nice addition and spending a little more of two bucks to buy startisback+ is just perfect to make better my windows 8.1 experience. There will be no Start menu until end of the year so don't expect nothing like that in next updates.

Best regards.
