Internet radio; or, how to easily make an MP3 collection.

Way back when LastFM was a big deal there was TheLastRipper - which did a grand job of grabbing streaming tunes and making good MP3s.

It died a while back and I've been on a quest to find what is really good for listening and grabbing tunes.

This is sort of a 1st person review - because what I like - you may not like a'tall, naturally.

Right this minute I am listening via streamWriter (http://streamwriter.org/en/).

It is free, has a very clean interface, great searching, seems to record well, and has the nicest new song notification of all those I've tried.

Just before that I'd been using Radiocent since Mrpink helped me to get it in english here.

This one does an exceptional job of getting separate whole tunes and has a nice way that it can either grab them continuously or just grab one tune then stop.

The sad news:

Apparently the Russian folks quit putting it out with english as any option in the latest version...

Too bad too as it is also quite nice and has good features.

Before that I tried Tapinradio - and it just plain sucked - very buggy and despite updates the bugs aren't getting fixed so I recommend giving that one a pass.

The same folks also make RarmaRadio - and I was also not impressed by that one.

I used Radiosure for a while before these others - but found it less than stellar in many ways.

It tries to impress by having a gigantic station list, which has a nasty side-effect:

Makes it hard to pin down good stations.

If one wishes to get tunes more directly, by simply searching sources by artist or title - then there's another app which has been very helpful for me - with a name that sort of hides it from searches by being buried with so many others=>

Free Music Downloader.

It's site is here=> http://thesz.diecru.eu/content/lastfm.php

And the direct download for it is here=> http://thesz.diecru.eu/data/get.php?file=LastFM.zip

If one spends a couple of hours with this one it is possible to get hundreds of MP3s - only limited by the speed of your ISP - and just about any tune in existence by any artist or group can be found without any limits or costs.

At least for right now my search for good stuff is finished - with all the above choices there will always be good stuff to listen to and grab as desired.

I hope any of this info might help anyone else to find good stuff too !!

Hmmmm...:

Can't get StreamWriter to connect to server?

For me, I tried a few stations in it's listings and it connected to any that were streaming without delay.

I hope you can get it to work for you !!
