Start Menu for Windows 8.1 first demo by Microsoft - Published on Apr 2, 2014

In short:

Yes, the Start Menu is coming back. At Build 2014 Microsoft offered an early look at the new Start Menu, which will debut in Windows 8.1 before the end of 2014. The new menu is a mixed of the old Windows 7 Start menu with a mini version of the Start screen in Windows 8.1.

Of course - if it's not April's fool joke. :D

Hope those clowns have not hard-coded their amateurish excuse of a Start Menu into their kernel - hope that other 3rd party Start Menu alternatives can still be used by those who wish to. <_<

When I'm delivering my technical training lectures to the youth across the big screen - my audience will invariably ask me that one golden question which I impatiently look forward to hearing, as it makes my day. :showoff:

Inevitably someone from the audience will raise their hand and pointing at the huge projector . . . . . . say something like, "Sir, if I may ask a question - how do I make the Start Menu on my Windows 7 look like yours?" Now, those youngsters get zapped when I disclose to them that it's not a Windows 7 but the Windows 8.1 that they are looking at and that the Start Menu that they've been admiring cannot be installed on a Windows 7 simply because Microsoft in their wisdom, hard-coded the native Windows 7 Start Menu so to refuse from being skinned.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed in the fervent hope that good sense prevails and they allow installation of 3rd party Start Menu alternatives - only time will tell. :pope:

:o

I for one am running a custom theme with start is back+ and WILL NOT be applying this Windows Update if hardcoded and third party software for an alternative start menu is not applicable!

Start Menu alternatives contribute hugely not only in facilitation of workflow and productivity - they also help us to cull the Modern UI (c'mon, let's face it - without the capability to kill the Modern UI, not many of us would be using a Windows 8 or the 8.1) Yes, there are other methods of doing that - but, Start Menu alternatives make it as easy as an electrical switch - one click and the Modern UI is on, another click and the Modern UI is off (choice is a powerful and democratic feeling alike having the comfort of a weapon against your skin - if you know what I'm thinking.)
