sujith
Statistics provided by Valve’s Steam platform for the month of March 2014 show that Windows 8.1 is the only Windows version that actually boost its share, while the other builds currently supported by Microsoft lost ground in the last 30 days. While Windows 7 64-bit remains the number one OS version on Steam with a share of 50.47 percent, according to Valve data, while Windows 8.1 64-bit comes next with 13.01 percent. As you can see, the difference between Windows 7 and 8.1 is pretty huge, but while Windows 7 actually lost 0.08 percent of its users last month, the latter actually recorded a boost of 1.19 percent as compared to the month before. The biggest drop was posted by Windows XP 32-bit, dropping 0.58 percent from the month before, according to the official figures. The 32-bit version of Windows 8.1 is still far behind and is now powering only 0.37 percent of the desktop computers also running Steam, while Windows XP 64-bit is the last Windows OS version in the charts with only 0.30 percent.Overall, Windows is still running on 95.04 percent of the computers with Steam installed and last month recorded a decline of only 0.13 percent.Source

dcs18
Moreover, Update 1 that's gonna be released in just a few days is the second service pack (SP2) for Windows 8 - within 2 years. How many service packs has Windows 7 received in it's 5 years - reeks of step-motherly treatment of the XP kind. Karlston
Windows 8.1 only gained from those users stuck with Windows 8 who upgraded to it because 8.1 is preferable to 8.It doesn't show Windows 8.x becoming more popular.

dcs18
Nothing in Update 1 is substantialSince it's not yet released, that statement is just an hypothetical claim - I'd rather reserve my comments until I'm able to check out Update 1 for myself over a protracted period of time from the :pirate: :pirate: point-of-view, in a real-life environment.Even if presumed true, that claim still does not take away the unfair, step-motherly treatment meted out to my Windows 7 and certainly does not justify my (once upon a time) wonderful OS being deprived of a Service Pack (SP2) despite such a long passage of 5 full years - the underlying reason, though is crystal clear for those wise enough to read between the lines (more on Microsoft's ulterior motives, below.)The fact is that Windows 8 on my primary system is just about to receive its SP2 within such a short span of 2 years whereas the 5 year old Windows 7 on my secondary system has absolutely no idea whether it would be given a well deserved SP2.UI suck a little less with a mouse, but that is not grafting a Start Menu in (which is what everyone is crying about, because once you have it you can 100% dodge the Start Screen and apps). As the the Modern UI sucks less with the mouse, like you mention, great - that may be an added bonus for n00bs . . . . . . . . . personally though, I'm not impressed with that aspect - a Start Menu alternative has always mitigated that non-issue for me, quite easily. The Start Menu that everyone is crying about . . . . . . . . . . . . . . why???My native Windows 7 Start Menu is static, dumb, inflexible and cannot be enhanced or customized - it has never received an update even once in it's entire 5 years. I'm tired of using the same old b!tch - I can't even run those awesome 3rd party Start Menu alternatives on my own Windows 7 (and, how I wish I could.)I'd rather have the power to choose my own Start Menu for my Windows 8.1 from a wide selection of actively developed alternatives such as StartIsBack, Start8, Classic Shell, etc., etc. Besides, these Start Menus ship with the capability to disable the Modern UI. Moreover, I'm able to dictate to Tihiy or to Nick as to the exact changes and/or enhancements I want with my Start Menu for Windows 8/8.1 - can I even dream of approaching Microsoft to complain about the abject impotency of my Windows 7 Start Menu? Microsoft can never grant us an exemplary and scalable Start Menu like this one - even if they can . . . . . . . . . . . . will they???In other words, thank you Microsoft for no longer foisting your outdated Start Menu (from Windows 7) upon us - we already have superior 3rd party ones over which you have neither influence nor control.Once I put Start8 on a VM it is no different than Windows 7Righto - to add to your statement . . . . . . .Once Start8 (or any other Start Menu) is installed on Windows 8 (regardless of VM or production machine,) Windows 8 becomes exactly like a Windows 7 on steroids with top notch security and future compatibility that comes with a longer EOL (End Of Life - XP Users would be smarting from the stinging EOL slap.)Please note, the performance that can be squeezed out of a Windows 7 has saturated - however, Windows 8 can be tweaked even further due to inherent attributes such as UEFI and GPT and a far cleaner kernel code with an enhanced security that is inbuilt - it even stopped Linux short, in it's booting tracks!!!Not to forget another important point, Windows Updates - the weapon that Microsoft deployed (or rather, did not) to dildo Windows XP which otherwise had a market share far higher than any other OS. History could repeat itself, if Windows 7 is not granted it's SP2 (regardless of whether Update 1 to Windows 8 is great or not as you tried to emphasize.) Only time will tell - I hope SP2 (for Windows 7, too) arrives, sooner than later (for the sake of others as also for my own.)BTW, who is so subservient enough to eat second-hand humble pie served by a third-hand greedy Microsoft - sorry sir, not me (I demand the very best - so long as I wont have to pay.) If only I didn't have to cater to my Customers (some of whom are still running Windows 7,) I'd have kicked the Windows 7 butt outta my secondary rig, too . . . . . . . . long ago.)minus glassy stuff to use.You can try searching the forums for the same (it's freely available in a modular avatar for Windows 8/8.1.)Personally, to me the glass look sucks - looks so bloody middle-class, now that it has dropped out-of-fashion (nevertheless, it's still available - for sentimental nerds.) Edited April 2, 2014 by dcs18

dcs18
M$ has learned that they better listen to their users..It's naive to believe that Microsoft listened to their users. :nono:Users requested them for the Start Menu - Microsoft gave us a Start Button, instead.Users requested them to be able to login directly to Desktop, at boot - at default, Microsoft continues to make us login to the Start Screen, instead. Before the Start button from the 8.1, it was still possible to login into the desktop after editing the registry, manually - with the 8.1, there is now just an option for the same on the GUI. :dunno:Microsoft isn't intent on listening to us - not while Windows flaunts such a major chunk of the OS market share. They will start listening only when we shift loyalties to other platforms - that unfortunately, is not gonna happen as long as Windows remains the best option with the second best trailing far far behind. :(
