Between ESET Smart Security, Norton360 or Karspersky.... which one will hog less my system?

Win8 x64

4Gb Ram

Thanks.

If you're a Power User, you might want to bin all those 3 suites and opt instead for standalones (will save you a lot of CPU cycles while returning you the finest of granular options) - will also do wonders for your learning curve.

If you're not a Power User, at default setting - right out-of-the-box, the ESS would be the lightest. However, if comprehensively configured there won't be much to choose between those three.

Unfortunately, almost all Respondents tend to advocate the same security system that they themselves use. If you refuse to grow into a Power User and insist on opting for a suite, I'd suggest the age-old proven suite KIS - please note I'm an ESET guy.

Remember, with 4 GBs of RAM, it's not about fretting over resource-hogging - it's more about obtaining the maximum bang.

Just to add my two cents -- everyone praises the Bitdefender suite (at least in many AV-Tests), been an Eset/NOD user forever, but wanted to check the highly praised low footprint on the OS etc... and guess what...

ESET won ! So for me it is ESET all the way.

As a matter of personal prudence, I generally do not take a position on choice of security . . . . . . . . . where, it boils down to different strokes for different people.

What I personally do when faced with a similar predicament is to simply perform a system-wide backup and then try out for myself; all the different available choices on a comprehensive basis against all other software & hardware in my environment - everybody has an environment which is radically different and one that keeps evolving . . . . . . . . . . . dynamically.

One needs to just strike a balance and arrive at that sweet spot which relates best to one's own environment - not to what other think, feel or believe.

When I was using Windows, KAV 2014 was as ligh as ESET. I would at least try KAV and see if the same happens for you.

Oh god, thanks for the feedback guys!!

I was using ESS 7 but I had to remove it and my system went back to speed.

So now I'm on default Win8 security

Def more of power user but not with 4Gb Ram laptop LOL

More likely to get the most power out of what I have. What do you suggest for AV and Firewall? Do I need a firewall? (I torrent and download lots no P2P)

I used ESET for a while and then got sick of how it slowed my system to a crawl

Stopped paying for it and back on Avast Free which is much less of a hog (about 15Mb memory usage - to put that into context, nvidia's tray app uses almost twice that)....for instance i can open a folder full of exes with Avast and it doesnt bat an eyelid, unlike ESET

As for firewall, i still use trusty Comodo x64 - though the old v5.12.256.249.2599 version. Hate the gui changes in the later versions..

I used ESET antivirus before I switched to avast free then pro. The lightest antivirus there is is eset antivirus now the security suite I cant speak for I dont recommend it as the firewall might not be that good I dont know I have never tried it. I recommend comodo firewall thats the best software firewall I know of now its antivirus is a joke. If you look at virus bulletin eset is the cleanest record of all antiviruses look here http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archive/vendor?id=14 there is only four no entries and two fails one in nineteen ninety eight and one in two thousand. See why everyone votes for it. The anti-rootkit didnt do that good when I used it last time thats why I switched to avast considering gmer technology is integrated into avast (for those that dont know gmer is the best anomly based anti-rootkit tool there is. The newest eset is better than it used to be anti-rootkit wise it can even detect obfuscated files avast cant do that. I recommend eset and yes if you cant use that next is avast (Make sure when you install avast in the tools section install only sandbox and safezone if you have pro if not dont use any tools makes avast use less hard drive space and memory) and after that is kaspersky antivirus.

I know Im using avast pro and Im recommending it like I said above eset then avast then kaspersky (I dont have a job and I do a crap ton of research on malware all the time that and I read the news on this site every day. I recommend you disable software updater and use secunia PSI I recommend you disable remote assistance and use teamviewer I recommend you disable grimefighter and you use advanced system optimizer if you must use a system optimizer or ccleaner. There you go there you have it..
