Currently I'm not being able to change the lock screen picture. Whenever I try to change it, the following error occurs:

Any help?

The only thing that helps - a clean Windows installation (again and absolutely clean) and true (genuine) Windows serial number and activation over Windows account.

Ah, I just have reformatted my laptop - it's been just a week or more.

You should decide for yourself, what you are doing or believe.

SnakeMasteR

If you use avast!

Go to security tab and then antivirus (In Avast 8, so it could be different for 9).

Go to behavior shield, then settings, then uncheck the option 'Monitor the system for unauthorized modifications'

If that isn't the solution, have you used any cleaner that cleans or fixes shortcuts in the past?

I'll begin with a memory test (memtest86+/memtest86)... if no problems, then a hdd test (not windows chkdsk, hdat2/mhdd instead)

A lot of problems begin with faulty memory modules, corrupting the info stored in hdd's and sometimes, breaking hdd's or video cards (not frecuently, but I've seen that more than a couple of times)

GL!

Obviously you have some sort of software or hardware issue but below are instructions to manually change the lock screen pic.

How to manually change lock screen pic:

-from admin cmd prompt type: TAKEOWN /F "%windir%\Web\Screen\*.jpg" and then this... ICACLS "%windir%\Web\Screen\*.jpg" /reset /T /Q (this ensures you can edit the jpg's in that folder).

-now go to c:\windows\web\screen\

-change name of first jpg which is default img100.jpg to img106.jpg

-change name of pic you wish to use to img100.jpg and copy it to c:\windows\web\screen\

-restart computer or device and you will now see you pic as the lock screen picture. ;)

Note: win 8.1 uses .jpg's and win 8 uses .png's so if needing win 8 lock screen pic then change above extension to .png instead.

C:\Windows\Web\Screen

These are the system ones. I'm stuck on a custom one applied by windows 8 manager's Lock screen changer. I have deleted it from the directory where windows 8 manager keeps it but it is still getting displayed.

Tried it but not working.

hehehe I forgot....it is in a temp location that needs to be deleted then replace your pic like I said above and it will work. Now this is going to be a pain but I will try to walk you through it. If need be we can teamview and I will do it for you. Just let me know.

First show all files and folders. Go to control panel and then folder options and click on the view tab. Now under that tab there are one bullet dot and some check boxes. Uncheck all 4 to show all files including system files as well and put bullet dot in to show files also. It will ask for you permission to do so (UAC).

Here is the file location of the hidden temp file of that pic that wont go away...

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\SystemData\S-1-5-21...\ReadOnly\LockScreen_(letter)

You will need to right click on needed folders and allow permissions. So right click on the folder that you cant access and click on security, then click advance button, now click on blue word that says change, add your username and click ok. Do this for all folders and also on the pic in that temp location. Now you will be able to delete it and now copy your pic into the c:\windows\web\screen\ but make sure to change the name of your pic to img100.png. Restart your machine and you will now see your pic as the lock screen pic, that is if your OS isn't hosed.

Note: If you haven't used the lock screen yet then there will be no temp file location yet for the lock screen pic. It only gets put into that temp location after it has been used at least once.

@Cerberus, thanks man for your kind effort. Currently I'm running out of bandwidth and unfortunatle I'm a GPRS user (from 19th century) which tell that there is no way that we can teamview.

Well, I was just looking for the temp location and you have provided it. I can do the other things. Thanks again.
