CyberGhost DNS Client Problem

DJPrice

Recommended Posts

Hi I have been using CyberGhost VPN since I made a post on here about a year ago. I've had no problems with it until the software was updated to version 5. Since updating it automatically starts the DNS client in services, which most of you know causes a system slow down when using the HOSTS file for adblocking etc. It makes it a pain to run CyberGhost v5 (latest). I've tried contacting the support team at CyberGhost, but the guy I spoke to was of no help at all & just said there is an update on it's way, probably next week, so to try that.

Does anyone have any idea's for a fix or has the same problem at all? My CyberGhost subscription is due to end in April, so would also possibly be looking for change for a better VPN again if anyone too has some new suggestions?

VPN's I've used; HideMyAss I then switched to CyberGhost last year.

VPN's I'm considering; PrivateTunnel (Good to have data when I want to use, that doesn't expire), Mullvad (not a yearly price), SecurityKISS (but I feel SecurityKISS is a little expensive) & finally Private Internet Access VPN

Any new VPN's for me to consider would be great.

CG5 has definitely been problematic, so I feel for you.

Have you tried just switching back to CG4? I heard that it will be discontinued, and they claim at least, that at some point using CG4 will not be allowed on their system. However, since you only need to get through to April on your membership, that might be good enough. I did run into someone on their forum who said he was still using CG4 at this time. If that was correct, than you should currently be o.k. with it.

Also, though it doesn't precisely address the problem you've mentioned, you might try un-checking the option in CG5 settings for force using the Cyberghost DNS servers. You can always find some other DNS options, and I did find to some degree removing that option changed how CG5 was working. I had this really weird problem with V. 5 where it started bypassing my HOSTS file altogether-- I was completely left scratching my head over that one, and have no idea how that worked out, other than that V. 5 is just plain full of surprises and kind of crappy :)

If you're having problems getting a copy of CG4 (it took me awhile) let me know -- I'll upload it somewhere and PM you a link. I'm thinking of switching back myself. Funny, I have an old XP machine where V.5 seems to be working just fine. But on a Win 8 machine it's a mess.

This shitty OpenVPN/TAP driver, i guess everyone who used the program or other software that uses the driver had problems with it in the past, be it with installation or updating or reinstalling. Sooner or later ending in reinstalling and repairing loops with nothing gets fixed at the end.

If you had an older TAP driver installed, maybe the newer one wasn't updated or installed correctly, then you need to uninstall the current TAP driver and reinstall or repair CyberGhost.

I do have issues too!, HTTPS sites doesn't load!, really a bad issue! I think it's related to a change in 'root certificat', I could not understand it well so no solution till now, Cyberghost is not what I thought :/

If you could link me up with CG4 it would be very much appreciated. I wish I had kept it on my system.

Cheers for everyone's input. It does seem that I'm not alone with CG5 problems then. V4 was fine, I never had a problem, then V5 came along. An update is on its way for V5, apparently that will fix all the main problems people have been having.

Anyone have any input for which of the listed VPN's I added is worth going for?

CG5 is one big can of worms it would appear!

Here you go..... I was lucky to have found a copy on an external storage drive I had, couldn't seem to find it anywhere on line. Here's the thing though, no promises that Cyberghost will still let people install the old version. So, this is just an experiment. Let us know how it worked out.

I'll PM the link to you as well, since I'm not sure if one of my favorite mods will decide he minds me posting it.... :)

Fix your PC people, I never had your problems with Cyberghost.

I had it before doing a fresh install on windows & then after too. Also do you use a HOSTS file? I found that the issue is the CG Service.exe file is starting the "DNS Client" in services.

CyberGhost always worked for me. I suppose it would work better if I was not in the US though.

-----They have U.S. servers but I don't think the company is based in the U.S. If I remember correctly, I think they're Romanian.

I don't believe it's a "fix your PC" issue. CG V.4 worked just fine. Seems to be something in V. 5 that's causing the problems. Particularly the way V. 5 seems to work with Windows 8, which by the way is true for the product of a number of different software companies -- they seem to have difficulty working with the bigger 'lockdown' and extended permissions that are required in Win 8. I've seen any number of different products that work just fine on an old Win XP machine I have, while the same software is a complete mess with Win 8.

So, if by 'fix your PC' you mean dump Win 8, then you might be right, but otherwise I would disagree.

I do not want to start an argument, but if you use a Registry Cleaner it may have removed statements. I say this because It happened to me using CyberGhost. I was either using CCleaner or Glary Utilities. I had to let CyberGhost re-install the Driver. Just to see if this was the problem I ran the Registry cleaner again and it did the same thing. Just Saying.

Maybe problems lie more with which widows you have installed?,I have no problems and I'm using Windows 7,I would be interested how many of the above are using windows 8?.

It's not about the OS you have, it's about the third-party softwares that one uses. I used W8 and cyberghost worked fine, now I'm using W8.1, and it works the same.

If you have another VPN installed, that causes problems. I had 3 and kept having to reinstall each driver when I used 1.

SecurityKiss has crapped out on me so just have Kepard now.

How do I know if Cyberghost is running in reality to cover me from torrents?

like I go to sites whatsmyIP and similar and still tells me my real home instead of the allegedly simulated location when Cyberghosts connects

Clearing your systems DNS cache should do the trick

Open command prompt as Administrator.. Type ipconfig /flushdns & press Enter

You should see... Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache

Close window.
