locoJoe
Hey guys. I am going to get my daughter a new laptop for her birthday. Here is the deal:1) I have about $450 to spend2) She will be happy if the laptop plays Netflix smoothly and if she can Skype smoothly (our internet is fast so that is not a concern, I am speaking of the video motion of Netflix and video conferencing like Skype being smooth with the Intel Integrated GMA HD Graphics Card...i think its an Intel HD Graphics 2500)3) Here is what I am thinking about getting her: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168343142494) What do you think?5) Thanx
R0H1T
Well if you're fine with an AMD based machine then this particular model is probably the best VFM device you'll get in the price range(~450 $) & it has better specs overall. Ryrynz
What R0H1T said, the AMD based laptop smokes the ancient Intel one. Plus you don't buy a new machine with Windows 7 on it, that's just dumb. Edited February 17, 2014 by Ryrynz

Kalju
Do You know, maybe can you help me - I'm allergic to AMD. Is it to be curable in any way? Edited February 17, 2014 by Kalju
stylemessiah
Either Toshiba or HP (recently theyve also been offering Windows 7 as an option again, yay) Nothing with AMD in it, unless you want it to run like a soviet cold war era calculator.....theyre a dead entity as a CPU maker and have been for some time. What ever you do dont buy Acer, unless youre a mental who likes throwing money away on poorly built equipment....a college i used to work at during end of year rollouts (swapping out old PC's for new) not too long ago switched to Acer, because they cheap, and paid the price....12 pallets of computers where you couldnt even open the drive tray because the tray caught on the case.....on EVERY single one...12 pallets worth. More than half will probably die before their use by date going on Acer experience over the years. dont even get me started on their monitors....ive seen more than half a dozen that have spontaneously combust with my own eyes. Utter crap. Edited February 17, 2014 by stylemessiah
johndoe
I'd recommend this one. Lenovo is a brand that I, personally, would pick anytime over dell or hp. It has Intel HD4000 graphics, 4GB ram, a 7.2K rpm 320gb hard drive, a wide screen display, a webcam and windows 7 professional 64-bit (which is better than windows dumb dumb a.k.a. windows 8 any day of the week) and comes with free 2-day shipping, all for under $400 :) Edited February 17, 2014 by johndoe
rudrax
How about Asus Transformer Book T100? It's a cheap hybrid.

It is a big difference. But if you go with a Win 8/8.1 machine, make that Classic Shell instead of Start is Back and you're set. :) Have used it a while now and really like it. ^_^http://www.classicshell.net/Best of luck on your choice. May it be a great one. :) Edited February 17, 2014 by T0nyB

Utter crap. It's all true. There isn't a colour of dog shit I could use to accurately describe AMD CPU. Your best bet is an Intel Haswell chipset for a Laptop. AMD only works on the paper they write the specs, it will stutter and cry and shit itself trying to playback HD video.
davmil
Strongly disagree - Best Buy is a lousy place to shop usually - worst value of any big box store unless it's something discontinued and obsolete that they're trying to dump. You'll get more for your money @ Microcenter than Frys or Egghead or TigerDirect 9 days out of 10. They also offer a 2 year 'no questions asked' warranty for like $60 - drop & water damage included. I'd personally avoid AMD under all possible scenarios. Get something with an i5 in it for less than $450 easily @ Microcenter. Finally - how old is your kid? If she's going to take this to college, I'd be asking if they have computer requirements or expect upcoming students to be outfitted with a particular setup. They may require, heaven forbid, Apple or a particular brand so their support staff can lend a hand without having to cover every scenario in the world. As far as the considered specs go from @locoJoe's initial post...Don't go there mate..Last week we had a client drop over a brand new HP, dual core AMD, 4GB RAM laptop with Win 8 that ran like a tortoise on Valium...Had to flatten it & change OS over to Win7, in order for it to run the deep sea sonar diagnostic software they use...Performance remained the same.... :( :(
