Airstream_Bill
I agree with everything that link said. You will not stop people from believing all the JUNK stuff will help their system including me. Ha! Ha! I always end up putting my System Back to its original state. No System optimization programs ever run on it. It comes down to Fleece the Public any way you can to get their Money.
Turk
Installing those tools onto Windows 8.1 just same as trying to install a Daewoo carburettor in to Golf GTI :) e.g. MSE and Windows Defender, not credible on this forum at all, however they are natively integrated and the most effective AVs that compatible with Windows. mike.mt
Great link 221eta....As posters above correctly say there is no such thing as a "magic pill" or "one stop shop" app that will boost system speeds.... Many of these snake oil products degrade performance by applying incorrect windows registry settings & adding extra useless background tasks....Caveat Emptor - or User Beware, even if its offered free!!! Pedrito
Nice article, I agree with everything. :)Especially with this part: "Worst of all, heavy security suites can slow down your computer with all their functions. They also distract you with notification after notification just to remind you that they’re doing something." :tooth:
locoJoe
I agree with most of what the article said but....1) You do need a FW to stop softs from phoning home...unless you actually buy every program you use.2) I have proved to myself that using a good defrag tool like O&O does make a difference in some(my)scenerio. http://www.nsaneforums.com/topic/131013-best-defragmenting-software/?p=6541303) I see no problem using a soft such as ccleaner to rid my PC of junk....sure I could do it myself but why? ccleaner does it in 2 sec. I too agree that lightweight products similar to Ccleaner & my favorite Puran Defrag - both freeware, do an excellent job in keeping any system efficient.... Been using them for many years on all our File Servers & Workstations. The firewalls supplied with the operating systems coupled with those enabled in all modern router / modems, can be set up to adequately secure most individuals requirements. Throw in an Open or Norton free secure DNS service and you put up another good extra barrier to help keep the bad guys out.As far as Anti Malware software goes. Do we need it.. In my opinion along with if not all of my IT security colleagues .. A big yes. Then its down to the individual to choose what product & features they feel fits their needs best.As also mentioned in many posts Common Sense is an asset, but it cant protect us in all scenarios. In our corporate environments the same concept applies but to a far greater level. As running without security shields for an end user or company is similar to playing Russian Roulette. That is my opinion & everyone is entitled to their own. :)

kn_andre
Quite Informative ... But it boils down to Choice of each Individual. Because most Tools / Softwares have their Pros and Cons.. No matter how "Good" a Software/Tool is, there are some people who will hate it for Supposedly giving them Problems on their System and Vice - Versa . Though Sometimes i must Admit that having Less Tools/Softwares running on a Computer will allow your Computer to Operate more Smoothly - but this is just my honest Opinion ... Kudos for Sharing and Cheers ...
