After registering, you can configure the service to notify you if there is suspicious activity occurring on any of your credit card or retail accounts. An example would be someone attempting to open an account in your name as a result of identity theft. It's not foolproof, of course.You can also download and view a copy of your Experian credit report. Experian is one of the three major consumer credit-reporting agencies in the U.S. As other posters have noted, I believe this service is largely limited to U.S. citizens with a Social Security Number.
