The problem in Ubuntu that was fixed in just a few hours

We reported yesterday about a bug that has been haunting Ubuntu distros for a while now, including the development version of Ubuntu 14.04. The problem has been fixed now, just a few hours after I mentioned it in the article.

When people install Ubuntu, they don’t get only the operating system, they also benefit from the expertise and dedication of an entire development team that works for the interest of the regular users. And they are doing it without having the users to pay a single cent.

I mentioned a bug that has been affecting me for a while now. I’m a regular user of Ubuntu and I've been having a problem with this annoying bug for quite some time. Not being a system breaking problem, I ignored it, but when I saw that it’s also manifested in the development version of Ubuntu 14.04, I wrote a small piece about it.

It turns out that there was a bug report opened for this particular issue. One of the developers from Canonical noticed the problem I mentioned and a patch has been issued just a few hours later, for Ubuntu 13.10. I suspect that the problem won't exist in Ubuntu 14.04.

This is probably one of the things that makes Ubuntu the most used Linux operating system. It’s not something flashy or something that’s even noticeable when you’re simply running the OS.

The success of Ubuntu can be attributed to a couple of things: its awesome community and its developers. And maybe we shouldn’t take this two for granted.

The community to me is the best out there. I mean they respect painfully stupid people and I appreciate it as I'm not THAT good with Linux. In a Windows IRC, when you don't know what the Command Prompt or the Run Dialog is, they'll bash you a lot first then help you. In the Ubuntu (but not limited to Ubuntu) IRC, when you don't know what a File Manager is or what a terminal is, no one gives a flying f*** and instead they or someone explains it to you. If a douche decides to go haywire on a noob, the mods bash Mr. Smarty-pants and sometimes even ban him on a Linux Distro IRC that I've been in before. You rarely see those kind of characteristics in a Windows community.

I used it once a few years back I think in 2007ish but forgot which version it was, they had posted a free copy CD in just 3 days, liked it very much however I was as noob now as I am, messed it up. Do not know how much they improved it since then

Ubuntu is, for me also, the best community in the world. People are very helpful and the development team is great.

Currently i'm not very keen on the new UI, but its still the best linux for 'common folks'. Appart from that, Arch rules :)

Pity its the kludgiest slowest linux ever made, with the worst gui of any linux

Best community,, umm they ignored and foisted theat GUI on people even after all the negative feedback...so um yeah, Community 0 Ubuntu 1

As i always say, use Linux Mint - strangely its based on ubuntu, but runs FAR better, without the kludge

Yeah I'd have to agree. Mint running either mate or cinnaman is far better than Ubuntu.

I downloaded a daily build of Kubuntu 14.04 on 1/06/14. I liked it very much. Found it very easy to use and I am not a guru with computers at all. However things went south on 1/13/14. After updating I got a black screen no cursor upon reboot. I reformatted and installed fresh, installed the updates and once again I got a black screen no cursor.

I have posted my issue on the Ubuntu forum. No answer.

I also sent email to two experts with Kubuntu who are very heavily involved in the distribution. No answer.

I have been able to boot into the GRUB menu. When I added nomodeset in place of no splash I was able to boot to the desktop. However after I immediately rebooted I again got a black screen no cursor.

I even tried to boot utilizing an older kernel via the GRUB menu. Same issue. Black screen no cursor.

I can do a fresh install and not add any updates and it will work fine. The problem is I don't know what update is preventing a normal reboot. Plus I don't understand why I can boot to the Desktop via the GRUB menu adding nomodeset but then when I immediately reboot I get a black screen no cursor.

If anyone can be of any help I would be very appreciative. However it has been frustrating that I have posted in the Ubuntu forum and sent two emails to the two Kubuntu experts and no response at all.

I do have a NVIDIA driver but I don't understand, if the driver is the issue with a kernel, why I can boot to the Desktop utilizing the GRUB menu adding nomodeset but if I immediately reboot I get a black screen no cursor. There must be a fix but so far no answer. Frustrating.

Probably either the graphics kernel module or the kernel itself. You can choose not to update those.

Also to note, some of the graphics driver gets run before X now. I had a problem with this with something before (ati/amd card), think I was in the same boat as you and had to set nomodeset, but it got fixed later on.

Should I wait until April when the actual release of 14.04 is available?

There were three hundred and thirty-seven updates. Is there a way to find out which one is the kernel update?

Kubuntu ran great for a whole week.

I am just frustrated that I have not received an answer from the two Kubuntu experts nor in the Ubuntu forum.

I would think by now that someone would have had the same issue and would have found a fix.
