8.1 for me.

Faster, more facilities and much better with a touch screen, but fine without.

For those who moan about the Start menu - it is there, its just covers the whole screen instead of being on one side. :-)

I wish I did not need a New Laptop. I hope that start menu is there somewhere. Ha!

Windows 8+ - any bugs you find post them here on nsane...

I'm on 8.1 and the only thing ive done to the system is install startisback (you can still get back to the metro screen aswell) my metro screen has around 5 icons pinned to it.

Most new pcs & laptops will have 8 on them, otherwise, you can probably put 7 into an existing XP box, but I would not think that 8 would work,

I would not even try to put 8 into an XP box, start from scratch, buy the motherboard and go from there.

ask yourself: "what will i do with this new pc?" choose your motherboard that offers the features you need

gamer?

video editing?

office apps?

streaming video over a network?

on the flip side, 8 is so system hog-ish I would go with 7, but thats just me ( so far)

Set everything to manual update (programs)

Set services you don't use to manual (black viper can help here)

Store images/music/videos on a portable hd (helps with de-frag)

Not sure why you would be getting "hogish" :s
