Flash drive isn't getting detected in the BIOS

Hey folks, I was trying to format an old desktop via bootable USB flash drive. But the drive isn't getting detected in the BIOS. The drive is detected when I boot to the desktop using the internal HDD but if I restart the PC and go to the BIOS, there is no sign of the flash drive.

The BIOS is Phoenix award BIOS v2.3.

Many laptops and older desktop systems shipped with the USB setting in the BIOS disabled. This causes the USB port not to be recognized within Windows®

How Do I Enable The USB Port In BIOS

Because computer manufacturers have individualized and varying configurations within their systems, the best source for information regarding your USB controllers setting is the computer owner's manual.

  1. The USB port setting can be located in either the Advanced Settings section, Peripherals, Communication, or Input/Output sections.
  2. Locate the USB controllers setting in your computer Setup (BIOS) and change the status to Enabled.
  3. Save the changes and restart your computer for the changes to take effect

does it suppot bootable usb?

i think the setting by @Tharixxx only to enable the usb to be use by the computer, not bootable usb

you can check at boot sequence whether it is detected or not

if not,you can try re-doing the usb again..

which app did you use to create the bootable usb?

or you can check the mobo manual

how old is your mobo?

try to update the bios firmware from the mobo manufacturer to the latest... it can be that the latest version enables usb boot

if there's no newer bios firmware then there's nothing to do... install from cd/dvd

I have formatted this machine twice via bootable USB and this is the same USB FDD that's not getting detected in the BIOS now.

It's a MSI mobo, the MS-7211 and it's very old. MSI recommends their 'Live Udate 5' update system components. I tried it but no BIOS related update is available there. And the DVD writer is dead.

have you tried to connect the USB FDD in ALL the usb ports?

check/change the battery of the mobo... just in case (if you don't have a multitester for the battery, just 'taste' it, you'll notice if it has enough charge)

good luck

An empty USB FDD also gets detected in the BIOS, no matter whether there is any data in it or not.
