Former Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Sha Zukang has warned that the dispute between Japan and China over the Senkaku Islands could lead to World War III.

CIting a Chinese-language piece written by Zukang for the the pro-regime Global Times, a report in the China Times says that Zukang warned of the futility of going to war over “those two tiny rocks,” a reference to the disputed islands which have become the center of a geopolitical tug of war between China and Japan, with the United States and South Korea also becoming embroiled.

“If China started a war with Japan, it would be much larger than both the Sino-Japanese War and World War II, said Sha. The United States and Japan should cooperate with China to maintain regional peace,” states the report.

Zukang’s rhetoric sounds somewhat alarmist but it is not that different in tone from sober analysts such as Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, who warned that the escalating crisis represents a “watershed moment for the world” and means “Asia is on the cusp of a full-blown arms race.”

Zukang was appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon last year as the under-secretary-general for the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs. He also served as Chinese ambassador to the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Zukang is known as an outspoken figure who previously said the United States should “shut up” over its complaints about Beijing’s military build-up.

He sounded a more conciliatory note on the current crisis, calling for “politicians and people from both countries to sit down and talk.”

As we reported earlier, The Japanese media has also been busy dreaming up war scenarios in response to the crisis, with popular weekly news magazines envisioning a major conflict between the two superpowers, possibly as early as January.

Tensions have been running high after Beijing imposed an “air defense zone” over the disputed Senkaku Islands and hinted that it may shoot down any foreign aircraft entering the area. The U.S., Japan and South Korea quickly rendered this threat toothless by performing several overflights of the area without notifying Chinese authorities.

Yesterday, South Korea’s Defense Ministry announced that it would impose its own “air identification zone” in the region, an area which overlaps those of Japan and China, an expansion that will go into effect on December 15.

Infowars doesn't just make stuff up out of thin air, they are reporting on something that was said coming from former Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Sha Zukang. Here is another article related to the Infowars article:

China and Japan would be foolish to war over 'rocks:' Sha Zukang

They are basically fighting over land...a very new small portion of land. Two islands are the fuel of the arguments between them.

Also from PressTV this is being reported: US urged not to ignite World War III in Pacific

China and Japan would be foolish to war over 'rocks:' Sha Zukang

http://www.wantchinatimes.com/news-subclass-cnt.aspx?id=20131208000081&cid=1101&MainCatID=11

It is not worth it for China to go to war with Japan over "those two tiny rocks" in the East China Sea, said Sha Zukang, former deputy secretary general of the United Nations and retired Chinese diplomat, in a report from the Party-run Global Times.

If China started a war with Japan, it would be much larger than both the Sino-Japanese War (1894-95) and World War II (1931-45), said Sha. The United States and Japan should cooperate with China to maintain regional peace.

The "rocks" Sha refers to are the Diaoyutai (Diaoyu or Senkaku) islands in the East China Sea. The disputed territory is claimed by both China and Taiwan, and administered by Japan. Sino-Japanese relations have been unsettled since last September, when Japan claimed to nationalize a part of the island chain by buying them back from private ownership.

Ultranationalism must be distinguished from a healthy patriotism, said Sha. "I am firmly against ultranationalism because it is far too arrogant to deny the right for other nations to pursue their own interests. However, we must not harm Chinese patriotism: they are two totally different ideas." It is time for politicians and people from both countries to sit down and talk, Sha said.

Even if China still has many problems, Chinese people cannot lose faith towards their nation. "Most Americans and Westerners I have met are confident of China's future," said Sha. "I don't know why so many of our own people believe that China will collapse tomorrow."

Does this NOT imply that it could possibly spark World War III? I mean, it says that if China started a war with Japan that it would be far worse than both the Sino-Japanese War AND...World War II.

What do you gather from that comment...that it would be larger than World War II? What would it mean if it was larger than World War II, including nukes, concentration camps, and everything else involved in a war that they say would be greater than World War II. I think it's more than fair use the term World War III.

ha ha at infowars

The possibility of another world war makes you laugh? You are laughing at infowars because they said it could spark wwIII and they are not the only ones saying this either. What do you conclude when the talking point from China Times says this:

If China started a war with Japan, it would be much larger than both the Sino-Japanese War (1894-95) and World War II (1931-45), said Sha. The United States and Japan should cooperate with China to maintain regional peace.

As I mentioned before in my comments above rather politely and well temepred, other news websites are all reporting on this issue in nearly same like wordings. You want to crucify all of them as well? Here they are as proof that this wasn't just a story made out of no place at all, it's bonified and is being talked about by other news agencies:

WantChinaTimes

PressTV

Business Insider

(The article from the Business Insider is closely related to the other stories)

P.S. dMog, please visit the links to verify that this is true.

Anyway I do not consider there will be a war between China and Japan because Chinese cannot form a union to support a war with a strong mind and foundation.MOST of the authorties in China are formed by seniors of the country formers who are now robbing their own country by any ways though their power and hope to immigrate to western countries. Therefore if the war happens our country would lose both the government and the money and leave only the patroits. And even I would commit a suicide rather than be a martyr who would devote my life to defend an unreal democracy though I have been reversed unwillily.
