Users Afraid to Install the Latest Windows Updates

Microsoft celebrates the 10th anniversary of Patch Tuesday this month, so the company most likely struggled to make sure that no botched updates are being delivered this time.

While it turns out that at least one buggy bulletin was shipped to users in October, it appears that some users are actually afraid to install Patch Tuesday updates and prefer to wait until they make sure that nothing is messed up with the fixes.

Several posts on Facebook, Twitter, and even on Microsoft’s Community forums indicate that some users have actually disabled Windows Update and postponed the installation of new patches until they make sure that everything is alright.

Here’s a post we found on the company’s support forums and perfectly describing the way some consumers now see Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday update cycle:

“I noticed that yesterday was Patch Tuesday and I have held off updating my Windows 7 PC given than in the last three Patch Tuesdays the updates have broken something inside Windows. I haven't heard an uproar in the internet so my guess is that this Patch Tuesday has been perceived as uneventful.

My hope is that the latter is the case, because I have had to hold Windows updates for more than 3 weeks in the last months due to the problems that have occurred in the last three Patch Tuesdays, and it is an action that is not recommended given that many Windows Updates address security issues.”

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that all Patch Tuesday are delivering botched updates, but it’s pretty clear that the problems experienced by users lately have affected the company’s image.

Microsoft needs to pay much more attention to the updates it ships to users, as Patch Tuesday was, is and will continue to be the most important day of each month for millions of Windows clients out there.

Count me in. I have to let off installing Windows Updates for about 2 weeks these days. Making sure by reading the main updates' descriptions and waiting for reported cases incase Windows Updates f*cks things up.

I just turned off Win7 Automatic updates due to multiple restarts caused by Windows Updates.

For Win8, I didn't have any issues, but you can't be too careful.

Must be everyone else having these issues because my Windows 7 Ultimate PC, boringly, is on automatic updates and i have seen exactly zero evidence of these claimed issues.....

Normally not affect all users, a time ago microsoft killed a lot of Windows 7 (32-bits) users in my country. the problem was regional and several people yet suing them.

Only installing the real system-updates,no firewall and other "security-updates".Works fine with a good program like EsetSmartSecurity! No update-problems and wasted HD-space on my machine, never had any security or other problems.

Surprising. Don't you want to verify updates? :)

With MS's trend of having bad updates and not to mention PS3 had an update that bricked systems these people don't want system instability because the last thing someone wants to do is either take their PC in, call tech support or just plain having to figure out what the problem is and then try to solve it. I already had to turn off automatic updates to manual installation because well if you don't do anything or don't see anything your PC restarts because of the updates. So instead of that i changed the settings to manual installation. Now i had to change it so i have to manually download/install it. Even during the first botched (or even before that) some users won't download or install the updates automatically for a few weeks to see if any bugs exist. I myself never ran into any problems but the last several updates have had me worried enough to only do it manually. It still lets me know there are updates and thankfully it shows the date it was posted so i know within a few weeks when it should be ok to install them.

This really can be a problem for MS as now some users are finding that installing updates are questionable at best and i wonder how many are actually discouraged from even updating their system or moving to a current one (ie: from XP)

why ? turn off automatic updates.

if you run youre car (does they do a oil change when you are driving that car ?)

turn off the automatic updates and do them when you think it is right to do it. (turn off your antivirus if you do so)

you do not need a double check on this one.

my 2 cents

Surprised that i dont verify them first?

I think in all the years ive used windows ive seen one that came through that had a negative effect, and that actually wasnt even Microsofts fault. The one time was back on XP when the the patch came through to disable autorun, it got stuck in an update install loop and kept failing. It turned out that the reason was down to Roxio's DLA on the users Dell laptop.....

I have my own personal PC set on automatic, and the ones that i administer set on notify. I dont always have the time to read the bulletins and sandbox test them (that would just add too much time each week), but as i do maintenance on those PC's under my control the day after patch day, i check my own PC for any signs of issues, and if none appear, and so far they never have, i then trigger the updates for the other PC's remotely (Kaseya).

Like i said ive had one update fail since windows updates began.

I can see from another post that its possible to be affected in non-english markets though.

I have never had an issue with windows updates but I do have mine set to notify and I do wait and watch making sure. As soon as I set it to auto "Murphy's law" will kick in, lol. I guess don't change the wheel if it is not broke.

Interesting, I only have one problem with windows updates in 20 years, that was last pathc Tuesday.

One or maybe more updates stopped my external drive working, I sorted it myself, but should not had to do it myself.
