Firefox Gets an HTML5 and JavaScript Flash Player

Mozilla has been working on an alternative to the Flash Player that is able to run Flash content using only standard web technologies. The tool is called Shumway and has now been merged into the Firefox codebase, though this doesn't mean you'll be seeing it in action too soon.

Shumway is designed to run Flash content inside the browser without the need for a plugin. It does this by rendering Flash apps as native HTML code using HTML5 technologies. In essence, it's a virtual machine for SWF files written in JavaScript.

Removing the need for the Flash plugin is a major security and performance improvement for the browser. On the one hand, any attacks that rely on the Flash Player are rendered useless. On the other, removing the need for the plugin frees up resources, though that's no guarantee that content will run faster. In fact, in the beginning, you should expect a performance penalty.

Shumway works similarly to PDF.js, which renders PDF files using the standard browser engine. What this means is that Flash code runs as securely (or insecurely) as any native HTML code.

Merging it with Firefox is a major step for the project and signals that Mozilla is confident enough in it to consider it a viable alternative to the Flash Player.

mozilia keep beating a dead horse :duh:

Simply because YOU don't like it doesn't make it a dead horse. As I told you before, you are not everyone, but you yet you keep leaving useless comments. Why do you exhibiting so much hate towards Firefox? I actually have other browsers installed and use them for different taks, but I still prefer and use Firefox as my main browser, it's fast and works without any issues for me, well almost every application I use is fast and starts instantly on my system, with very small differences, even iTunes, which some people are complaing about. Every browser has it's ups and downs, where one browser does better, the other one does worse and vice versa. Firefox is definitely no dead horse. Chrome and other Google products install useless services like Google Update unless you use the offiline installer, for which we have nsane to thank for.

Not sure what are you trying to accomplish with these set of hating comments or what response are you expecting. Even if Mozilla would make Firefox the fastest and most popular browser, yet you will probably continue to hate it.

Youtube videos (and not just Youtube) work even without Flash Player, using HTML5 instead, but there are some videos that won't start. It seems Youtube still has restrictions on videos with ads for the HTML5 player on a desktop browser, when the same videos work on mobile devices with no problems.

"Additional Restrictions (we are working on these!)

Some videos with ads are not yet supported (they will play in the Flash player)"

That's Adobe Flash Player, this will be build-in Flash player, designed and maintained by Firefox themselves.

Those who want to know more, they should check out the Mozilla Wiki page for Shumway.

Still a big fan of Firefox on Windows/Linux.

On Android however it's another story; it's huge (download is bigger than Windows version) slow, bloated, buggy and, like Chrome, has the least user configurability of any mobile browser. Boat Browser or Dolphin are far better.

Agree with you there about Android version. Download is huge, space it takes it huge, is buggy, slow and not the best around.

However, if you are OK with a slightly older but better / faster browser, then try Opera Mobile Classic - it is perfect for phones will insufficient RAM.

it would be good to have something like this with FF. IMHO, they should release this ASAP. I've stopped using FF entirely because a lot of web content relies on Flash and I've stopped using that adobe :shit: altogether because it's a real real PITA installing/uninstalling/upgrading it every month and then finding out the new version has more vulnerabilities/exploits than the last version...

chrome comes with built in adobe :shit: that gets updated everytime the browser does (imagine that, upgradeable :shit:!!!)

No offense but you are an idiot.

First of all, majority of websites are designed(sadly) with IE in mind.

Moreover, FF nightly is pretty much as fast as/faster than chrome but at the same time doesn't eat so much ram for no reason.

There's pretty much no reason to use stable FF at this point as nightly is much stabler than stable chrome builds themselves(I've been using it for 9 months and had between 10-20 crashes on two machines).

Chrome still lacks proper customization and theming not to mention that it's Google's own botnet.

https://nightly.mozilla.org/

give it a try

everyone has a right to an opinion, he does same as you. that does not give you the right or the authority to go around calling other people idiots. no offence :P

I tested it today.

It's OK, but most of the Youtube videos i came across would not render.

It is promissing, though. I can't wait to get rid of Flash.
