How to backup wireless internet settings in windows 8.1?

Hello,

As the titles says ,how does one backup wireless internet connection settings in widows 8.1 to a usb/folder so as to restore at a later date.

In windows 7 there was an option to save the settings to a usb drive in the connection tab in Network and Sharing centre- your connection (right click) .

This setting is missing in windows 8.I know a couple of third party tools that do the job ,but I wanted to know if there was trick one could use to do it from the os itself.

Thanks

Backup Wireless Network Profiles in Windows 8 to USB
Open Control Panel and go to Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.

On the left-hand pane, click on “Manage wireless networks Link.

You will see all connected wireless networks.

Right-clcik one of them that you would like to backup its setting, and select Properties.

Under Connection tab, there is a “Copy this network profile to a USB flash drive” link at the buttom. Click on it.
Insert your USB flash drive. Click Next button and follow the wizard to copy the Network settings onto your flash drive.

Import Wireless Network Settings in Windows 8
Connect the USB flash to your device.
Navigate to your flash drive.
Double-click on setupSNK.exe file, and select Yes button to confirm that.

You could try Network Profiles Utility v1.0.2

Vista/7/8 only, freeware, and portable.

  • Backup/Restore of Wireless Network Connection Profiles (Vista/7/8 only)
  • Backup/Restore of IP and DNS settings (if either are STATIC and not assigned by DHCP)
  • Program can be configured to automatically backup/restore settings with one click, by launching the app.
  • If a backup for the current system is available it will be restored.
  • When no existing backup is available, your profile backups will be generated.
  • Fully portable app contained in a single EXE file, no install required.

The utility is convenient for end users, computer repair techs, and network admins to restore wireless connection settings and static IP/DNS configuration settings after format/reloading a PC, replacing a PC with a newer one, or even deploying wireless connection profiles and/or static DNS settings to multiple PCs.

*Wireless Connection Profile backup is dependent upon technologies that exist only in Windows 7/8

* No Windows XP support.

*Vista may export/import profiles successfully but may not actually import the wireless password.

* Cannot be run from a UNC path.

@FreeRyde,

I have been advised the same by others, and I specifically asked this for the part I have quoted from your reply.

This option is seen on windows 7 but in both my windows 8 and now 8.1 rtm this option to save the settings of wireless is missing.

There is no option of Manage wireless networks in network and sharing center and no option to Copy this network profile to a USB flash drive on the connections tab of my connection.

Is it missing on my system or its not at all present in windows 8 and above.

This is what I want to find out.

Please confirm.

Thanks

I use Nirsoft Wirelesskeyview to see wireless network name and password when I have to format a PC on a friend.

So people know what wireless network to choose and what password to type in.

Do you have a wireless card installed or a cabled internet card?

Obviously I do have a wireless card and a working connection.

I asked about this cos earlier the facility to backup to usb was in the windows itself and one did not require to enter large keys to get wireless connection going.

This is now not present in win 8/8.1 and as mentioned by freeryde other software do the job but you need them rather then using the os itself.
