Windows 8.1 Doubts!

Recommended Posts

Ya.. I'm little late to this topic as I'm out of the town and off to internet for a week.. :P

Any way, there is everywhere discussion about the leaked Windows 8.1 RTM, Activation Issue, drivers and antivirus compatibility issues and so on... in the forum. But I can't go through all the topics related to windows 8.1.. :P

I have some basic doubts regarding windows 8.1. If anyone using it just make my doubts clear..

1) Is windows 8.1 a new operating system or just the service pack for windows 8?

means will I have to simply update my windows 8 through windows Update or will I have to reinstall the new OS?

2) My laptop is of year 2008(Windows vista was preinstalled in it) but Windows 8 is running smoothly in it without any drivers conflict. Will it be wise to upgrade it to windows 8.1? ( I have doubts about driver incompatibility in windows 8.1).

3) MS has not released Windows 8.1 officially. should I wait till it's official release? or Is the leaked version same as the official release ?

4) I have activated my windows 8 through november_ra1n Phone method. will I have to do the activation again if i upgrade it to windows 8.1?

5) And what about antivirus? Is Windows defender still bundled with it? or Any antivirus fully compatible with it?

:) :) :)

1 You can update through store.

2.Have installed on older pc's and no problems and runs OOB ( upgrades and clean installs)

3 They are the same

4 Yes, same method

5 Yes and some AV work now and all will work not long after official release

Edit

Upgrades actually work flawlessly, and i have not had a single problem in 5 days

You simply download an update ( actually Win8.1) which is downloaded through the Windows Store. so you can choose when to download it . I dont know the actual size of the update offhand. All installed software, files and settings remain untouched with an upgrade and as i said, it works like a charm.

NSFfan has trouble with a driver and others have also, but you only hear from people who post a problem. I have installed on 12 pc's and have yet to encounter a problem.

Win8.1 is just as buggy as win8 was. BSOD's lockups freezes. And I'm using a brand new pc. I had no issues with Server 2012 R2 accept for activation. Win 8.1. :shit:

I installed leaked versions of windows 8.1 along with the preview release and had no problems at all. Installed the leaked RTM over everything and still no problems, have lost nothing in the process. Works absolutely fine for me.

I was about to give it a try, but... better keep 7 x64 ultimate sp1!

On my older laptop, win 8 or 8.1 are faster than 7

On my newer computer 8 or 8.1 both are much faster than 7

and I have not had any problems

@the Patcher,

If your apps are always stuck at pending

  1. Open an administrative command prompt (go to the Start screen, type "cmd", right-click on Command Prompt and hit "Run as administrator")

  2. Type the following four commands in the command prompt:
  3. net stop wuauserv
    cd %systemroot%
    ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
    net start wuauserv
  4. Try downloading app again.

Win 8.1 update will not affect your Office (will remain activated) or any other installed software

Also 2 members have posted a problem (and it is not even officially released yet dont forget) , then see how many have downloaded from ra1ns topic and Win8.1 works for the vast majority without problems. ;)

I came across this problem on one laptop with Win8 installed and tried everything i could think of, i cleared store cache etc and nothing worked, the apps would just not download and stayed pending. Found this little gem and after trying, all apps instantly downloaded and no further problems.

:)

Edit just saw your edit, i mean try to download an app again

is it really safe to install java runtime on w 8.1?

Just check here all software compatability for Win8.1 , but i would think it is.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/compatibility/CompatCenter/Home

I want to know that is there any way for the start button in win 8.1 Pro to show Programs list by left click?

StartisBack is the best start button/menu replacement to use (IMO), but the next stable version will only be released by Tihiy after WIn8.1 is officially released. (check out what it can do here http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/163489-startisback-rc2/)

You can use this next best for now Start8 precracked http://www.nsanedown.com/?request=163201599

the start button in Win8.1
