MrGreen
I have recently changed CPU while using an activated (legit) Windows 8, and had no issues. But i believe if you change more than 1 peice of hardware at a time then you will have issues.. so you should be fine with just changing CPU. LiLmEgZ
You shouldn't have to re-activate but its really all a shot in the dark... MS likes to make sure you are on the same parts n all :P

I have read other forums and answers, and have learned that when you replace a piece of hardware for example a network card or CPU you have to reactivate Windows but I am still unsure of how to the reactivation works. I read somewhere that you can replace all parts but the motherboard. I just want to know that if i were upgrade just my CPU would Windows reactivate. My current CPU: AMD Athlon 7750 2.7ghz AM2+What I want to Upgrade To: AMD Phenom II X4 940 AM2+OS: Windows 7 Pro x64 TrekDozer replied onIt's unlikely replacing just the processor will require reactivation, but if it does:Call Microsoft Using Manual Phone Activation (if you can't activate online):If you have trouble activating Windows 7 you can call Microsoft to activate by doing the following: 1. With Windows running click Start, then in the Search box type: slui.exe 4 2. Press Enter on your Keyboard 3. Select your Country. 4. Select the Phone Activation option, then call the number given and hold for a real person. And i will find out then if i need to reactivate thanks again. Found this helpful 0 MikeCerna replied onYes, there is a big possibility that this will trigger an activation issue. Any major hardware change will trigger an activation issue but this is not something to be alarmed. All you have to do is to reactivate your product key thru online or thru Phone activation. The total explanation of this is your hardware has serial keys and it is registered thru Microsoft's Data base and from time-to-time Microsoft collects data such as your current serial keys for your hardware and cross reference it to the previous one and if found that the matching is incorrect then this will trigger an activation issue. This is just for our own protection as there lots of ways on how steal our product keys.Microsoft is just protecting us. Found this helpful 0 DutchMunky0890 replied onI received my CPU Yesterday (AMD Phenom II x4 940) and removed the old CPU and started it up and didn't have to reactivate. Thank You all for the replies. Edited September 4, 2013 by STEEL
