This extension.. is about to become a WHOLE LOT more popular. I like it :) Will definately need it for on campus this year. Anyone know how to turn a torrent into a direct download? For free.. that actually works?

You could try this http://www.nsaneforums.com/topic/173025-how-to-convert-torrent-to-direct-http-link/ :)

Yep, I know about that post. But Put.io is no longer free and has no free plan, Furk.net does nothing when I click the login button, so I can't log in there. Zbigz.com is useless because my campus internet is 1.5 MB/s ~20 MB/s (yes folks, 1,536 KB ~ 20,480 KB a second) If I wanted to torrent that slowly I'd use my native client.

Better question: how can I configure a torrent client to work behind my university's firewall?

VPN's protect you system wide, Webproxy only in the browser. Things like Flash&Java can connect through your system and around your browser proxy which leaks your real IP. Let alone many other downfalls like slower speeds, lag, latency and broken websites.
