Help to choose the right AV/IS

Hi all,

i have two systems.

1). PC - Atom 230 1.60 GHZ processor, 1GB Ram, Windows XP Pro

2). Laptop - Core i3 with 4GB RAM, Windows 7

I am familier with most antivirus brands. I tried Eset 6 on my laptop and experienced that annoying delay when downloads finish and when opening executable files.

I tried bitdefender on my laptop and it has that terrible boot delay (black screen).

I tried SEP 12.1(Symantec) on laptop and found out it also gives boot delay (normal loading)

I tried Comodo CIS 6.2, and its very light and fast.. but gives too many false positives.. Comodo is catching all the keygens/tools i downloaded as malware/viruses. I can add exceptions but how can we know when we download a new keygen, the file is safe if comodo simply lables it as malware.

I tried qihoo 360 and its gives major harddisk activity in PC with XP and in my laptop it occasionally cause locks ups, (360 gives a feeling that it will kill my drive soon)

I want a solution which is light on each systems according to their configurations. I am looking forward to performance, and defense from major threats. Either a free AV/IS or AV/IS with fix :P

So guys please suggest me one. Currently i like eset and comodo, but i don't like the drag Eset its causing by onaccess scanning. Could anyone give me guide on configuring Eset Smart security to fix these on access scan delays Or any configuration where i can make comodo not to shower my system with false positives?

These "delays" are your protection.

..plus the fact that you have shit PC.

You shouldn't have any performance issue on that laptop. have you checked system for disk fragmentation, reg problems etc?

The `i3 laptop` is not so bad , maybe the software installed on it is not ok configurated - I have a laptop with similar configuration and it works really fast . B)

( Windows 7 SP1 32bit + The New Bitdefender Internet Security )

This has been done-Ad nauseam. 1) personal preference. 2) Common Sense. 3) More Common Sense. 4) How much memory do you have. 5) What processor do you have.6) Do you care about slowdowns. 7) Do you stupidly click everything in sight. 8) Investigate what YOU want in security software.

I personally dual boot Windows 7/8. Windows 7-MBAM Pro only.

Windows 8-MBAM Pro/Webroot Secureanywhere. I don't get Malware, but I don't want to be stupid, either. RESEARCH!!!!!!

@ Dark Dragon -> that netbook with Atom proc. will work reasonably enough with ESET Av installed , but if you want best performance ( ?!? :P ) from it you should use it protected by Shadow Defender :)

Going from hard disks to SSD was the most beneficial and noticeably upgrade I've experienced. Might look into that...

As far as black screens, your boot files are getting scanned. You can turn off scan at boot for almost every anti-virus programs out there. Pretty quick fix.

Regardless, Eset is more performance over protection. Try that.

I've never had a problem with last year and this year bitdefender versions. This year especially is geared towards performance.

I loved Kaspersky, but the damn program can noticeably slow down your computer. Heard it was fixed, but I never tried it out. Great protection though.

I suggest you avast! Internet Security or Eset Smart Security .

They are best choice. Both are fast , light on system and they have very strong protection .

Pick one :D

Cheers

Everyone seems to have different problems with their machine. Follow the suggestions posted above. Do not let things Start and run that you are not using. Definitely do a system defrag. I have an atom processor in my 5 year old Netbook and I run Bitdefender IS 2014 without any problem whatsoever. I do not have 15 different things running at the same time. I have Mail, FB , NSANE and maybe Media Player and a Windows Theme running. My machine runs fine. I think you need to just clean up your system and you should see some improvement. Check your Disk for errors also. Pick out one of the AV or IS suggested by the Nsaners. Good Luck to you.

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions and inputs. I am not a no brainier. I've been doing AV tests from last 6 years, customizing core android and i'm a technical engineer. However one can never stop learning and no matter how much knowledge one acquires there still a lot more to learn. I am going with Eset SS. Just wanted to know if any of our nsane members know some good configuration tweaks for eset to perform better or tweak CIS 6.1 for lesser false positives.

Try Zonealarm AV with Firewall

Install and no worries

And next to it like others say Malwarebytes

Have you ever tried AVIRA Free AntiVirus?

No, but doesn't AVIRA annoy with pop up ads?

Yes it does, at least once a day.

I think the best antivirus program for your labtop is Kaspersky internet security especially if you are interesting/working on collecting (keygens,crack,hacktools..) and pirated software in general .Kaspersky has easy management system interface for those stuff :D .. Bitdefender is cool too . B)

For you desktop pc I advise you to install Eset v5.2 or 6 ( I haven't test v7 yet !) or don't install any antivirus at all :P (cuz your PC really powerless !) ..So keep on the Windows Defender and integrated firewall .

By the way I have MSI netbook U270 (AMD e-240 1.5 ghz ,ram:4 GB,Windows 7 -64-bit) with Eset v5.2 and It's working flawlessly .. :)
