Can anybody tell me how Google detects IP Address?

So i have been using Hotspot Shield for a long time now, and recently bagged the Elite 6-months giveaway from c|net, so now running the elite version..

But what i have seen is that every google application detects a different public IP than what's reflected by Hotspot Shield, like for example, currenty i have selected USA, so the IP address shown on:

Whatismyip.com:

2IW9imc.jpg

Whatismyipaddress.com

IEhCYIm.jpg

myipaddress.com

cEhsox6.jpg

Tracemyip.org:

sbuyUng.jpg

Means, every single IP address locator websites reflect the same IP address of USA location, which is fine, and now google products:

Gmail:

9vyoHpS.jpg

Google.com: (which should automatically redirect to the reflected IP's location)

tqPmTBF.jpg

Google for my original location (through direct url for my country):

zEbVCUV.jpg

Now that's totally weird, google not only shows different public IP's from all other IP locators, but if i open google for my country, then it reflects my TRUE IP ADDRESS, yes even when hotspotshield on and working, google for my country detects my original IP address...

HOW??? I know that there's no way to hide your identity on the web, but i can't understand why every ip locator detects the same ip address, but google products can locate my true public IP address??? Why doesn't then all those IP locators show my IP address?? And why Gmail and Google.com detects a very different IP address?? Can anyone shed more light on this how it's working?

I had the same question few months ago, what I did was to delete coockies all the time before I closed the browser, and use VPN almost for everything, after 2-3 weeks of this routine Google finaly started to not recognize my true ip. Google.com opened at google.com(when used USA IP) not google.my country abrev).

I don't say that has to do with what I wrote, but this is what I 've experienced.

this means that google has actually stored numerous cookies on my PC and using them gives my true IP???

But what if i am in private browsing mode and normal mode??? I've tried in both, and the results are same, private browsing mode should have isolated the cookies stored... Heck google's intrusion is deeper than i thought... :o Feeling really good that atleast i don't use chrome... :tooth:

Not really sure how any of this stuff works, for me DuckDuckGo always detects my real IP while using Hotspot. :dunno:

If I understand correctly, Hotspot too uses OpenVPN (like the free-ware client). Now I've tried Hotspot out, a couple of the most popular OpenVPN servers (like Lock VPN, or VPN Lock, I forget) and some other cool services like CyberGhost, Sumrando, SecurityKISS, etc. and they all fail on some website IP check, and do good on others. Most of them fail on check.torproject, which successfully detects the real address 99% of the time. (Not sure, but I think security kiss passed Tor Check?)

So I wouldn't worry too much, just not count that the service will save my ass. It is free, after all. My pick is still Hotspot. Besides giving me a US address for free (only location most of us need, really), it somehow achieves great speeds with unlimited bandwidth, and anyone can easily remove the adds with noscript.

As indicated in the above post it is probably a DNS server leak that you need to fix by changing your DNS to the one provided by the VPN.

On VPN I get the the following:

whatismyip.jpg

myipaddress.jpg

Tracemyip.jpg

And logged in to Gmail, Google can only see the VPN IP as well.

Some VPNs actually don't hide the originating IP address, and Google might be able to guess your location based on your DNS servers, worse yet if your ISP forces their dns suffix. Ironically you might have better luck if you used Google public dns servers, lol. I use their dns servers for my VPN setup and it's never failed me before. I recommend using OpenDNS or Google public DNS settings in all your incoming modems/routers where applicable.

Ensure that the VPN provider claims anonymity and try any of these DNS:

Provider Primary DNS Server Secondary DNS ServerOpenDNS 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220Google 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4Comodo DNS 8.26.56.26 8.20.247.20

ok, it's a windows machine, so dnsleaktest.com yields following result:

4dkZCUs.jpg

qbUsAiA.jpg

And i don't think that i can change my dns server, coz whenever i tried to change it, no matter what windows configuration shows, my ISP seems to be intercepting all the DNS requests from my computer and even if using Google DNS or OpenDNS, it reaches to my ISP's DNS only, this error is also shown by namebench, it ain't able to start the benchmark and gives this error:

tey0Py3.jpg

Is there any method to bypass ISP DNS and use GoogleDNS or OpenDNS without contacting the ISP itself???

Easy fix ppl.....its your dns leaking. All ip hiders and vpns leak. Here is the solution and do the test after running these three vbs files in proper order and your dns will not leak. The last one is to reset after you close vpn. Might work with ip hiders as well but I dont use those. I use this myself with vpnium which ocen reversed. By the way, thanks ocen. ;)

Remember ip hiders only work on the browsers not your system.

Enjoy the fix. ;)

If you are using a router between you and the internet. You can change the DNS in the Router settings.

The above link is still working for I just downloaded it but here is another link to a different upload server. Make sure to uncheck box so not to use their downloader app first before clicking download.

I used it to test if it works, but it doesn't for me, with some servers from my vpn(US server) when I go to www.google.com it goes there, with other servers from US when I go to www.google.com it goes to www.google.my country abrev.

It's not about translation, when I go to google.com it should go there if I use USA server, but instead it redirects me to my local google.

Don't understand me wrong, I appreciate your help, all i'm saying is that it might not be de DNS, because I have the same problem as lordnsane, and if I swich to another server in my vpn it works all fine (google sees vpn server ip), but for others not (and I put the example with google) What I did, I run those settings, and tried to connect to servers that I knew that had problems hiding me from google(servers from my premium list), and it didn't work for me. (google could still see my real ip)

I run it again to recheck it- connected to USA server, all sites above points to my USA server ip, but I tried to watch something on hulu and this happened : Sorry, currently our video library can only be watched from within the United States

I understand but just not being able to hide from a site isnt telling me what is leaking. I understand you wish to test on those sites but I need a dns test done for me to see what might be needed. Without any details other then I cant access this site or site still showing your info really isnt saying much other then it fails for you. Do you understand? I will check back in tonight for I have some things to do but I will check back.

I did the DNS test leak with those setting and this is the result.

WARNING: If you are connected to a VPN service and ANY of the servers listed below are not provided by the VPN service then your DNS may be leaking. (You should be able to recognise them based on the hostname, ISP and location). This is not an issue if you trust the owners of these servers with your private data.

We detected the 2 DNS servers listed below.

1 is my ISP

2 is VPN.

Later edit, I did the test again, with another server that works on hulu, but DNS shows the same results as above and at www.myip.ms they can see my country (real one) but I find this strange.

Your IP Address (IPv4),

N/A (Your internet connection is not IPv4 capable)

Well then you have a DNS leak......The ISP is hijacking your DNS requests or blocking the other DNS server. Have you also checked the network card properties to see if the DNS server is stuck in it? You may need a router with DD-WRT to get around an ISP block.

Read this

http://hackercodex.com/guide/how-to-stop-isp-dns-server-hijacking/

And search google for other ways to check or get around.

PPPoE should not matter. I assume you are using a router and that the Router is making the connection. I also assume you are using VPN and not a web Proxy....

Set the DNS server in your router settings.

On your computer clear out the DNS cache. Open a cmd window and type ipconfig /flushdns

Check the network card settings on your computer to be sure you don't have DNS settings in it.

For Windows Right click the Internet Icon at the bottom of the screen and select open network and sharing center.

Open_Network_and_Sharing_center.jpg

Then do the following to check the current settings. Click on the connect that is connected to the internet. Click on Details and look to see what is listed for DNS. It should be the gateway on the Router as below.

network_properties.png

If it is not then do this to change the settings on the network card. Open Network and Sharing Center. Click the Connection connected to the internet, Click Properties.... Click the internet protocol to highlight. Double Click the Network protocol to bring up the properties box on it. Click the USE Following DNS Server addresses and type in the DNS server you want to use.

Ok, I did lots of tests with more than 5 vpn providers (basically anything that I could put my hands on).

So, with at least 30 DNS tests on all VPNs, more than a half worked, it showed only the vpn ip, but some didn't (which made me feel bad because some trial vpns succeded and a paid one had some servers that gave my identity away based on DNS leak test).
