PSU help

My PC is a typical store bought type of thing from Packard Bell. (It was refurbished and very very cheap)

As soon as I got it I put in a better graphics card and more RAM. It has been doing really well for what it is.

What scared me was the PSU stated it was 250W  I couldn't believe it was sold with such a low powered PSU, and I wouldn't dare add anything else to the setup. (The Graphics card I added is really light on power)

Okay so I finally got around to sticking and old psu I've had lying around for years from an old gaming machine I used to have. (550W) Because I wanted to add another HDD and was worried it wouldn't be able to take it. I got some adapters for molex to sata. Like I said it's an old power supply

Squeezed it all in some how. Powered it on and stood back :eekout:

30 seconds later BOOM! the damn thing blew up :( I gave it plenty of compressed air cleaning days before trying it out but it's been lying around for a long time. So maybe fan stopped working or something. Didn't have much time to find out :D

Why do you think it decided to stink the room out with burning electrical eau de cologne?

Do you think it would be okay to buy a new power supply and fit that in my pc?

It didn't seem to damage anything else. I put the one that came with it back in and am using it now.

Just thought I'd ask for the opinion of people more experienced than myself on the matter. Any recommendations for a new one? 500W should be plenty, and modular would be good so as not to clutter the insides with masses of unused cables. Only thing is it must be pretty cheap as I can't really afford it atm.

Thanks

Can't say much, but I think you are lucky that the rest of the components are fine.

When you buy a new one, you may want to stick with brand names -- ATX v2.3 is the newest version you can find (with v2.31 being Intel Haswell-compliant). Brand Names I use frequently are: CoolerMaster, SilverStone, FractalDesign, but Corsair is my favorite. Antec are in the middle -- they can be either excellent in one model, but another can be a complete bust. The more you pay, the better internals you will end up with. Not all wattages are to be considered the same. Larger name brands will quote smaller power outputs knowing that you can exceed them and still be in good hands. Unknown brands will state MAXIMUM output, meaning you should expect 15% or less wattage. Corsair's TX750 will actually be a 800w power supply... BRAND-B will actually be 715w, rounded up...

Also, make sure you calculate how much powered PSU will you need, if you plan to buy one. Also remember to make sure you consider the future, if you plan to buy a new PC later.

Thanks Psycho and DKT. I've run a few calculators and i'm always currently over 250W. Usually 320-350. You can see why I dare not add anything more to my pc.

Any opinion on OCZ and be quiet! psu?
