A friend just brought me a couple of phones to remove sim-locks on them. As every store or shop offers this service round here, I've always thought that it isn't all too complex. (The phones are a Lumia 800, an Xperia Mini Pro, and a Samsung P6200 tablet.) Now, with this new Android stuff I haven't been following, it's a little difficult to get started. I really don't care for Android, but I would like to help out a friend not to pay for something unless it's absolutely necessary.

I have only operated on old type dumb-phones and some UIQ smarties. The protocol there was simply reinstalling the software using the manufacturer suite. From what I've found out, there are now some "unlock codes" you can put in for an easy fix (Is there a way to get them for free?). Am I right to presume that a full system reinstall of the latest firmware remove the lock?

Any tools, programs, fixes, tutorials for idiots, or links to useful specialist threads on other forums would be helpful. :)

Try this threads on XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/tags.php?tag=sim+unlock might help.. For what I have experienced some require ROOT access and some don't try it..

Find the appropriate forum section on XDA (Best site for anything smartphone hacking/development related) and then use search for sim unlock of that forum.

I would highly recommend you do not be lazy though and just post asking for help sim unocking as you will very likely get shot down if there is already various topics on it (Which there very likely is).

dunno about lumia or the tablet but i have an xperia mini which is smaller brother to the mini pro (major difference is the physical keyboard present on the mini pro).

if i was in your place, i'd just unlock the bootloader and flash a custom rom on it and see if that does the trick. there are some really nice ICS (ice cream sandwich) and JB (jelly bean) roms available although presently i'm using cm (cyanogenmod) 9.1 unofficial from fxp

if that doesn't do the trick i.e., the simlock is connected to the baseband, then you might have to flash a stock generic ICS rom from sony prior to flashing a custom rom

Please ensure to do an Nandroid backup for each device before ANY kind of custom rom flashing.

Also becareful when playing with the sim lock, I think it's hardcoded into the radio (baseband), if you mess it up you're going to have fun trying to fix it, as it's chipset specific.

Dodel.
