Any desktop youtube player program that works ?

I have been looking around for a standalone player that will just take a Youtube URL and play it without using the browser.

I found some, but they are old and/or do not work.

One example is http://vinnplayer.com/, which has not been updated in a couple of years and does not work - it opens nicely enough, but plays nothing at all.

Another one depends upon IE, which I do not use and it doesn't have the flash plugin as a result.

Any pointers greatly appreciated ?!?

This works great - a great suggestion:

I tried it and it plays very well.

I'd like it a little bit better if I could make it's menu items more verbal and less graphic - and will check to see if that is possible.

Thanks Verry Much Yuuup! !!!

Sadly, I must correct my initial response and hope someone has a better suggestion than Smplayer.

After using it for about a week, i can say it is -mostly- good and has some nice features, but when it fails it is just nasty.

Several times it has messed up badly and all I could do to make things better was to re-boot.

Everything else I was using was fine and I usually don't need to re-boot very often at all.

The problem was definitely this player.

From my OP:

Any better suggestions, please ??

Thanks.

OK - something broke - dunno what did it - but it was after getting & using smplayer - so that's OUT for good now.

Just for yuks I looked over at SF for 'youtube player' and was reminded of MPC-HC, but could not figure out how to make it play from a URL...than I found SVPtube ( http://www.svp-team.com/wiki/SVPtube ), got it, and set it to use MPC-HC.

This is just UBER COOL.

If anyone has a better suggestion, I am all ears - but now I can just copy a YT URL and presto, it opens & plays.

What's not to like about that ?!?

PS:
There's an amazing list of multimedia s/w at http://codecpack.co/ .

They list more players there than I ever knew to even exist !!!

Geez.

SVP-tube works fine - but MPC-HC is crashy as all get out.

Total no-win.

Now I'm going to try BS Player portable and see if it's any better...

Wow.

I made the OP over a year ago - and still nothing is around that plays YT vids outside a browser correctly.

Seems like a sad state of affairs given how many YT downloader apps there are - but I have yet to see one that includes a search function - a player - and that WORKS ?!?

Thanks Very Much for sharing this wonderful portable app Mr. Pink !!!

Recently I've just been using portable Light Alloy along with SVPTube to start yt links copied from email notifications.

It mostly works quite well except for some links that just will not open in it at all.

This app has terrific features from what I can tell.

Just pasting in the code from a yt URL is enough for it to locate the video.

One minor trouble for me with it, sadly:

No picture shows (the audio is fine).

Could be my OS needs an external codec for it to work right - but I've no idea how to figure out which codec that may be ?!?

Thanks.
