Will buying a new router help?

After 3 years of using the same router with the same problems, my dad decided to get it replaced. The problem was that, whenever it rained even if it was just small drizzles, the connection would just be so unstable that it would've been better if it just completely went down. My dad will get his bonus at the end of the month and we are trying to decide on either buying a new router or pay for a completely new service.

For those in the Philippines, its a PLDT myDSL bundled plan. 1299.

It has to be the phone lines. Check with some neighbors to see if anyone else has the same issue. If they don't, have whomever come out to your house and check the junction box in your home. But even better would be a switch to Skybroadband?

My neighbors feel it too except they don't get disconnected but they just feel a massive slowdown. The customer service guy also told me that it could be the phone lines. Also, what's a junction box and where do I find it?

I've had this happen before years ago before switching to cable. I lived in single story home where the phone line came in from corner of the property underground all the way to the back of the house where it went up and connected to the phone box. What happened was that one day it rained really hard/bad and a small trench was dug up to route the water out of the property. In the digging, the phone line was nicked. It worked fine most of the time but if it rained hard and the ground saturated, water would seep in and make the connection unstable. The phone company came over, dug out the underground cable and replaced it.

It just happened last Year, October. There was a massive typhoon that struck the country so its safe to say that nature kinda did most of it.

Whether a new router is really needed will depend on the root cause of your internet connection problem(s.)

You'll need to introspect and find out whether you need that new router or want it. ;)

Sounds like you have a water ingress issue.

I had something similar, where whenever it rained my connection would become intermittent. I called them out, they spent a good few hours scratching their heads, replacing routers, cables in the house with no success. When they finally worked out what it was, it turned out that water was seeping into the main connection point at the end of the street. Once they'd fixed that, my connection was back to normal.

Replacing your router would have little / no effect as the connection drop offs sound like they are not related to hardware or the cable feed into your house, but another external source, especially if other people on your street are having the same issue.

Regards

Dodel.

Not too sure...? Ask the ISP guy,but as dodel said, you may have chances of being a victim of water ingress issue, not sure.

In last 5 years, I've bought 4 routers, none solved my problem. Turned out, it was indeed the faulty line in the street. My ISP fixed the line, but the telephone line trouble was back. Finally, recently they changed the line, have got a disconnect only once since then.

I suggest you strongly ask / request your ISP to look at the lines.
