All is well, the company says; the once-flawed fix is now safe

Microsoft today re-released a security update that had crashed customers' PCs and crippled the machines with endless reboots, saying that the revised patch is now safe to install.

The revamped MS13-036 update -- first issued April 9, but pulled three days later from distribution -- "resolves issues some customers experienced," said Microsoft spokesman Dustin Childs in an email Tuesday.

"The new update, KB2840149, still addresses the Moderate security issue described in MS13-036, and should not cause these [rebooting] issues," Childs added in a post to the Microsoft Security Response Center blog.

Two weeks ago, Microsoft yanked one of the two patches comprising MS13-036 from the Windows Update service as reports spread that the fix was generating the notorious "Blue Screen of Death" (BSOD) error message and paralyzing PCs with repeated reboots.

Microsoft never clearly described the causes of the BSODs and endless reboots, saying at the time, "We've determined that the update, when paired with certain third-party software, can cause system errors." Childs today also declined to get into specifics, instead saying only that "some customers were having issues."

Customers and experts, however, pinned blame on combinations of the security update and "G-Buster," a browser security plug-in widely used in Brazil for online banking; and on the Microsoft patch and Kaspersky Lab security software.

In a support document, Microsoft had posted several error messages that were symptoms of the patch failure, and recommended that Windows 7 users uninstall the update.

The revised MS13-036 update has been restored to the Windows Update service, and will be downloaded and installed by machines with Automatic Updates enabled. Microsoft urged those who manually download patches to deploy the re-release at their earliest convenience.

Customers who prefer to retrieve updates manually can obtain the patch appropriate for their system -- Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 -- at Microsoft's Download Center by searching for " KB2840149" to filter the results.

I tried to install KB2840149 on my Win 7 x64 last night. It hung on the Updating - don't turn off computer screen. I waited about 15 min. and forced a power off. Tried safe mode - went back to updating screen again and hung. Restarted in normal mode and finally got a Update failed message. Even after the update rolled back the system, it wasn't working right. The Windows startup sound would play a minute or two after startup. I did a system restore and all is good now.

I'm using ESET Nod32 v5, Comodo Firewall, Malwarebytes. I'm not sure if one of these prevented it from installing.

Update: I tried to uninstall KB2823324 (the original BSOD patch) but it hangs just like KB2840149.

I have no restore points previous to KB2823324. I guess my only options right now are to ignore KB2840149 or format the HD.

I have read several other reports / websites, etc.....

where the faulty patch of KB2823324 , was only affecting the Windows 7 32 bit versions of Windows 7 ( mainly the Windows7 32 bit OS versions that were using the G Buster plug In or Kasper Sky Labs Internet Security Suite Software....

I have roughly 8 or 9 computers all using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and I use ESET Smart Security 6......... I have not experienced any issues or BSOD's on any of my computers...... I do have the original download patch KB2823324 installed and I manually update my MS updates every Saturday, after I thoroughly read the info on what each update/ KB knowledge base report says the update is for......... if the knowledge base report for a KB patch update is uninformative, I will research other internet sites or blogs/forums before I install a MS update KB******* patch ........

Hope this is Helpful ( edit - 2 of my Win 7 Ult. 64 bit OS computers only have windows defender on them, and no other type of software virus protection, etc... they are protected via my server/hardware firewall

I do know of numerous Windows 7 32 bit OS users that have run into the BSOD and the rebooting loop scenario because of the original KB2823324 download fubar situation a cple weeks ago.........

again, Hope this is of some help to you or anyone else......... best of luck to everyone

Johnny,

The system I'm having the problem with is an Asus laptop (AMD processor) running Win 7 64 bit. I have not had any BSOD's. The only problem I'm seeing is that it hangs the system when either trying to install the new version of the patch, or trying to uninstall the older version. I'm running ESET AV v5, Commodo Firewall, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and Winpatrol. I tried dissabling all of these with no effect.

This is the only problem I've ever had with this laptop. It seems to be running ok, so for now I'm going to "hide" this update.

If you don't have any problems, then leave it.

Update: I was finally able to uninstall KB2823324 (it was hanging the system at reboot). Here's what I did:

Exited (shut off) Malwarebytes Anti-Malware & WinPatrol. Temporarilly disabled ESET NOD32. Ran the uninstaller. Rebooted (no hang at this point - wow!). Shut off and disabled the programs mentioned above again and Installed KB2840149. Rebooted - no hang - yay!

Before doing this, I installed Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838). I don't know if that made any difference.
