StartIsBack is a great way to relieve your (and your users) Windows 8 pain. StartIsBack returns Windows 8 a real fully featured start menu and start button, behaving exactly like the ones in Windows 7. StartIsBack radically improves desktop usability and makes new Start screen clutter-free. StartIsBack is fully native lightweight zero-privileges program, cheap and fair, fast, stable and secure. Boot to desktop; Original fully-featured Windows 7 start menu; Desktop and Modern interfaces clearly separated; Make Start screen clutter-free; Totally native; Rich customization and configuration; And More to come! Think of it as a transition path which Microsoft should have made for Windows 8.

the only problem i have with this is they are asking for a license - what are the chances of a patch coming along for it?

and what are the advantages of this over Classic shell or start8 by IOBit

This is the real Microsoft code and the real Windows 7 Start Menu resurrected from the dead by Russian developer Stanislav Zinukhov known on the MSFN/MDL forums as Tihiy.

It's not a Start Menu replicator unlike all the others. It is the real McCoy. Hence, it integrates beautifully with Win8 and makes it perform more like a super-fast Win7 installation. No lag and no 'Metro Flash' at startup. :)

Pardon me if I sound like a StartIsBack evangelist, but at $1 per lifetime license, it is by far the best $1 you'll spend on any tech product in your life :D

The only problem is that MS are deliberately being a PITA by taking out the entire Start Menu code from their 8.1 Blue or whatever version, thereby rendering this incompatible with that version. Too bad, 'cuz it was great while it lasted :)

Apart from the well known fact that StartIsBack does not run as a background process/service - a relatively unknown advantage that it holds over any other Start Menu alternative is that it can be visually themed to complement the overall Windows skin.

New:
- Option to show taskbar on the Start Screen. When enabled, taskbar is available on the Start Screen. It's also recolored to match Metro color.
Supports auto-hide and secondary taskbars. Hot corners which are overlapped by taskbar on Start Screen behave like configured to behave on desktop.

- "Pin to Start menu" is available in all programs shell context menus, not just in File Explorer
- Excluded shortcuts for system shortcuts which are available on the right start menu pane (Run, Control Panel, etc) from start menu MFU program list
- Multiple activations of the same license key is possible on same Windows installation but different hardware (to handle VMWare Fusion / Parallels Desktop)

If you want to downgrade from this release, please uninstall it first.

Tihiy, the author of StartIsBack said :-

" I've received a request from Microsoft to remove start button orbs which contain Windows logo.
This means Version 2.1 release must have all different orbs. I'm looking for a good designer to create a good-looking replacement start button picture."

Maybe someone from here (nsane`s member) can help...who knows...

The most handsome compliment I ever received for my Start Menu was when one of my Customers started pleading to me to install StartIsBack on his system - he was running Windows 7. ^_^

Please do not click on my current Start Menu.
