The best about:config tweaks for Firefox?

What really are the best about:config tweaks for Firefox, I mean must have tweaks? I know that disabling all animation makes Firefox faster, and if you have a SSD disk you would like to move your cache away from your SSD.

But is there something else too? Like pipelining and tweaking network settings, or is it worthless? Is it Firefox fast enough without network settings?

Moving temp files and cache off of the ssd pretty much defeats the purpose of having an ssd in the first place.

You can always create a new topic where you can determine the best SSD tweaks, creating a new topic is always highly recommended. =)

No new topic necessary. It was in direct relation to your mention of the about:config tweak for moving the Firefox cache off of an ssd. I'm saying that it's not really a tweak.

All three, Firefox installation, Firefox user settings, and Firefox caches should be on SSD I think.

If you want to speed up Firefox scrolling to make it as fast as Chrome / Webkit? Try this:

mousewheel.default.delta_multiplier_y > Change to 200 or 250. Enjoy super-fast scrolling. :)

The above is my personal tweak, the only one (other than already mentioned 1000 times) I'll recommend. :P

If you want to know the things you have changed or Firefox has changed, open about:support. ;)

Here is a collection of random notes. Do your own research but you can use this as a point to get started on available settings to possibly tweak.

config.trim_on_minimize

browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers

nglayout.initialpaint.delay

browser.sessionstore.enabled

browser.chrome.image_icons.max_size

browser.tabs.closeButtons

browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground

browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo

browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo

network.http.pipelining

network.http.proxy.pipelining

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

network.dns.disableIPv6

content.notify.backoffcount

plugin.expose_full_path

ui.submenuDelay

browser.cache.disk.parent_directory

move this to a ramdisk drive

rowser.cache.disk.enable

browser.cache.disk.capacity

browser.cache.memory.enable

browser.cache.memory.capacity

Disable Anti-Phishing - Firefox comes bundled with an anti-phishing filter that warns you of fake sites pretending to be things like ebay and bank login pages. As with the ression restore, though, it results in additional writes to the drive. This is especially noticable in the first several minutes of using Firefox Portable as it has to download the anti-phishing database and store it within your profile (a 3mb+ file on Firefox 2 and a 50mb+ file on Firefox 3). You can disable this feature by clicking Tools - Options and then selecting the Security tab. Uncheck the box next to "Tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected forgery" and then click OK. The anti-phishing filter is now off. If you'd like to get back the space taken up by the database of forged sites, exit Firefox Portable and then head to the FirefoxPortable\Data\profile directory on your drive. Delete the urlclassifier*.sqlite file.

Disable autocomplete drop-down entirely

browser.urlbar.maxRichResults as -1.

See web addresses that you have typed

browser.urlbar.matchonlytyped to False.

DISABLE 3D HARDWARE ACCELERATION

gfx.canvas.azure.enabled = false縶

gfx.content.azure.enabled = false

gfx.direct2d.disabled = true

layers.acceleration.disabled = true

gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled = false

gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.use_gdi_table_loading = true

Moving temp files and cache off of the ssd pretty much defeats the purpose of having an ssd in the first place.

There is big misconception here, RAM is still faster than SSD, that's why moving cache to RAM will increase performance of software, in this case Firefox.

Plus have in mind that 4GB of RAM today is minimum.

The best about those hidden "tweaks" is: if you made any mistake, have fun finding and reverting the "tweak" you applied if an error or something comes up lately. about:config-Entries.

But is there something else too? Like pipelining and tweaking network settings, or is it worthless?

Tweaking Firefox for pipelining works fine (and good, too) - but, only at websites that support pipelining. At unsupported websites that tweak is generally counter-productive.

Is it Firefox fast enough without network settings?

Have noticed that most of the nSane population are quite ambiguous (and careless) with 2 words - speed & bugs. What's your definition of fast - given the above circumstance?

There are two types of Firefox caches, one is disk cache, one is memory cache. The disk cache being on SSD will boost the browsing well.

If you have SSD and default Firefox settings disk cache will be on SSD, where else it can be? :tehe:

That is not tweak, that's buying better storage device.

What I meant was by disabling disk cache even on SSD you'll gain performance boost.

Better yet on ramdisk .....

I don't know. Anytime I've ever tried ramdisk or anything similar I've had nothing but problems. If it's so great then why don't ALL people with 8+ GB of ram use it for ALL temp files, Firefox and otherwise?

Well, the OP is saying that moving (disk) cache away from SSD is what he is aware of. For which, I'm saying that keeping it on SSD rather than the HDD would be more helpful.

I see. Well, Firefox fan wiki says that at 4 GB, only 30 MB should be in memory cache, rest should all be on disk. And consider this, disabling disk cache will mean that whatever site you load, it's cache gets lost after restart of Firefox, which isn't any speed improvement in my opinion.

Also if you mess something up or simply want to revert only the Firefox settings you just need to delete prefs.js stored in Firefox Profile Directory
